Yes. It has to be 32bit because 64bit guests are not supported.
As Carlos says, you need to use the 64bit version of VPC on the host. Don't be confused by that. You will still be running the 32bit version of XP as a guest.

If you go the "Virtual Machine" Route, can it be the 32 Bit version of XP?
We are running an old version of delphi. It did not install well on Vista 64Bit......so, one of our programmers decided to turn off Vista UAC and go to town on the O/S putting old components into Windows folder and who knows what. At this point I don't know if it's a Vista problem, 64Bit problem, or a "Operator destroyed the integrity of the O/S" problem.
Anyway, the Vista image is so damaged nothing works right anymore, so I believe we will just reinstall or repair that from the HP image on the machine. But he now wants XP 32Bit to run this old program. If running Virtual machine will work, we can certainly try that.

The short answer is no. Multibooting XP and Vista is harmful to Vista's recovery options. Booting into XP destroys Vista's restore points, shadow copies, backups and CompletePC Backup images. It is due to the incompatibility between XP VSS and Vista VSS.
The much longer answer is yes, but...
Since your model comes with Vista x64 preinstalled, as long as you are installing a retail copy of XP Pro (not an OEM copy from another compuer) you will OK as far as licensing is concerned. However, you need to check with HP regarding your warranty and the impact on HP support if you proceed.
If you choose to install XP, be aware that you will be installing in the wrong order since Vista has already been installed and will you need to manually set up a dual boot system. The recommended order is oldest OS then newer. In your case reinstalling Vista so that it is second is probably not what you want to do.
Perhaps a better solution is to run XP Pro in a virtual machine on your Vista desktop. It depends on what you want to run in XP whether this is a good option for you. Tell us what you hope to do with XP and perhaps we can advise further.

Guys / Gals,
I have an HP DV9225US Notebook. It has two hard drives in it. My primary O/S is Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
I want to know if I can install 32 Bit XP Pro on the second drive and boot from that drive, without interfering with my 64 Bit Vista (which I am quite happy with).
