My 1999 dell computer chokes when trying to connect to the Internet. This
started about two months ago, I use Dial-up networking and I have to redial
up to 6 times before it will connect. I get the following:
Disconnected from AT&T
Dial-UP Networking was unable to complete the connection
Error: 629
You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed.
Double-click the connection to try again.
I stopped all virus and pop-up stoppers, tried different access numbers and
called AT&T (India) multiple times over a 2 month period. Basically they
said my modem drivers are out of date and I should contact Dell for an
update. Dell said I have the latest drivers. AT&T will not do anything, they
said it is because of the AT&T, SBC merger, the update of their modem which
dropped out the older drivers, and that is normal as newer software is
introduced. I can not talk to anyone except in India and they will not tell
me any name or telephone number for a person here in the USA headquarters
office that I can address this problem to. They claim that they do not know,
can't tell me or are not allowed to give out that information. In other
words "go to h**l". A little infuriation here!
Anyone know of a GOOD Internet service provider for us old folks using
antique software and hardware like w98 on an odd ball 1999 Dell computer?
