I have this old pcs in my house both are mickey mouse brands but I have a few
files I want to get out of thme. this files are mostly personal info that's
why I haven't forget this PCS for all the sensitive info I have there, I even
changed the power supply in one of them to make sure I always see my files
print them etc, honestly I rather have those files there in my old w98 that
has no access to the net than here in this new pc which is always online.

But like we all know we can't depend on those old machines I want to get
online with those PCs windows 98 and send me a few emails with this word and
excel files.

I tried to connect last night I even install the att setup cd twice and
nothing happens only an error unable to read the modem (the att modem) and
att's number.

I called and they told me because Microsoft doesn't support 98 anymore,is
unsafe, and old.... they can't help me and their modems don't support any old
systems soooooo they say I'm never going to be able to go online with this pcs
I called 3 times and the 3 persons told me that it makes sense but come
on!! Is there something i can do? to get online ????

Re: Experts I Need Your Help

Rather than continuing along the (on-line) route you are attempting, you
might want to consider a couple of alternative methods of retrieving your
personal files from your two old PC's. :-

1) Removing the hard drives and connecting each of them in turn to your
'new pc' as secondary drives to access those files.

2) Or better still, an alternative method could be by using an IDE-USB
adapter to access (and transfer) the files.

See the following example :-
http://www.usb-ware.com/usb-2-ide-adapter-ud200.htm
But you might find a cheaper price by doing a further Google search.

Rather than completely scrapping your old PC's, your old drives could be
recycled and used as extra (portable?) storage.

Re: Experts I Need Your Help

Being as kind as I can about AT&T Internet Support services: AT&T never has and
never will, ever have a clue on proper public relations with their internet
consumers. I see they haven't changed their smoke and mirrors tactics when consumers
inquire about issues with their internet service. The second to best thing they ever
did was to acquisition their internet service to Comcast. The first best would be
for them to get out and stay out of the internet business. The ultimate best, would
be an order to relinquish any internet services within their control, and ban them
from ever having any direct or indirect internet association.
They are the same bile now as they were in the past and will be the same bile in
the future.

Set up an OE account on each 98 machine using the same configuration settings you
have now in the PC you're using.
Or
Set up your email using the instructions from their site here:

Use a thumb drive or floppy disk to transfer files.

Re: Experts I Need Your Help

Hi,
I am no expert. I installed the ATT modem without using the disk, you
cannot use the disk with Windows 98. I just plugged it in and got on
line. There were some thing you have to do to before you can get on line. I
do not remember what they are. Of course ATT won't help you in any way. They
want everyone to update to the latest versions. They have not trained any of
their techs to help us. I ask this group if I need any help. Of course there
are other providers that still will support Windows 98. I think you have to
look around to find them. Good luck if I find anyone that can help I will
have them post here. Windows 98 is as reliable as any other OS, maybe even
more reliable. Please don't believe the ATT excuse. I plan on keeping mine
until this machine dies. I have had it since June 1, 2000.

Eduardo,
What type of modem do you have? I have an external modem w/router that
I got from ATT. I ordered it on line from them. That way you don't need to
tell them you have W98. I think that even their regular modem works the
same. The one with the router acts as a firewall. I just did not use their
disk that came with the modem. I do not use any of their stuff, such as
their virus scanner, etc. You need someone that is in this group to help you
figure out the real problem. I have ATT DSL. If you have dial up modem you
will have to get another provider. I had PeoplePC until I switched to ATT
DSL, PCR has NetZero. These are inexpensive.

Right. And NetZero's customer support also was lacking. HOWEVER, I never
will have an epileptic fit of anger like Brian A.-- because they added a
month to my subscription to compensate the expense of the call. It was
McAfee's auto-System scan causing the problem! But NetZero just kept
having me play with their own settings!

With everything hooked up and turned on, open a command prompt
(Start>Run>COMMAND, <enter>.) At the prompt, run IPCONFIG. What does it say?
Post back here with the results.

With all recent ATT DSL setups, all I had to do was connect and the modem
automatically prompted me to activate. Did you manage to at least get
through the activation procedure with the ATT techs? Is the modem also a
router? What model is it?

Re: Experts I Need Your Help

Hi PCR,
I also had problem with McAfee updates, that is why I got Avast! as
virus scan. By the way, about Avast! I had to uninstall and reinstall
Avast!. I had a problem after deleting some files and tried to fix the
registry, It did not work. Then something messed up my computer. I had to
go back to a backup and when I did, I was not able to access Avast! I am
glad I have the back up system even though it backs up on the same machine.
I had to reinstall Avast!. You were saying something about the ball with a
line through it. When I reinstalled it, I wound up with 2 balls one with a
line, or (i) and one with an (a). I then remembered I had merged the two. I
merged the 2 again and I have 1 only with an (a). Just thought I would tell
you about it. Too bad about you being charged for the phone call with
NetZero. That is why I got the Ultimate with PeoplePC. It is a little more
expensive but you are not charged for tech support phone calls. I was paying
$12.95. Their regular PeoplePC online is $9.95 I think. You then pay for
tech support by the minute. If you want to get the PeoplePC Ultimate you
just call 1 800 Peoplepc they will send a disk.

If you ever switch to AT&T internet, I've got a C-Note that says you would by the
2nd time you called their support number(s). The first call will step on all but one
of your nerves, the second call will stomp on the only remaining one you have. AT&T
is the only company that has to fear seeing my name and number as the caller. I'll
bet their support personnel flips coins to decide who's the unfortunate one that will
receive my wrath. I'd like to think I'm the reason they sold their internet division
to Comcast which AT&T had purchased from Continental Cable.

You may see it as being rude, I look at it as being aggressive to pound the point

This is your first mention of wireless and usb, both are critical details you

Re: Experts I Need Your Help

Hi Brian,
I never called ATT because I know by what I read others have gone
through. I won't even use their tool and all things that I was having
trouble with leaves eventually. Every so often the tool shows up. I have
never taken the phone line out from the back of the computer in case I have
to go back to dial up. The plug is hard to get to. I have a short phone line
still plugged in. I do not want to have to move the computer to plug it in.
I only have a small space and would have to balance the tower on the edge of
the desk. I leave the cord plugged in place just in case so I can get off
an email or go to this group for help.

Well, I do recall an occasion/two -- now that you've offered to bet --
where I blew up on the phone with my bank, with OTB, & even with a
brother. I must decline the wager! But NetZero did compensate!

Yep. They have abandoned us lowly 98 users. BUT, I can't mean-mouth
them, because somehow I escaped paying for it for 6/so years! Also, I
EXPECT they will be back on the the day the last XP/Vista user perishes
of XP/Vista-irradiation!

| By the way, about Avast! I had to uninstall and

Hmm. The uninstall of McAfee went fairly well-- & it could swallow
avast! five times! However, you may have deleted a file or registry
entry avast! needed.

| Then something messed up my

I have that problem too. But at least my backup is on a separate
partition. If that fails, it's back to my Compaq QuickRestore CD's &
square one! I know it's on my to-do list to burn a current backup to a
CD of my own-- but I've lost the list!

| I had to reinstall Avast!. You were
| saying something about the ball with a line through it. When I
| reinstalled it, I wound up with 2 balls one with a line, or (i) and
| one with an (a). I then remembered I had merged the two. I merged the

Yea, finally I've merged them, myself, thanks.

| Too bad about you being charged for the phone call with
| NetZero. That is why I got the Ultimate with PeoplePC. It is a little
| more expensive but you are not charged for tech support phone calls.
| I was paying $12.95. Their regular PeoplePC online is $9.95 I think.
| You then pay for tech support by the minute. If you want to get the
| PeoplePC Ultimate you just call 1 800 Peoplepc they will send a
| disk. Angel

I can upgrade to a faster NetZero, but things seem OK as is really. I
don't do much NET travel. $9.95 per month is a nice price to keep.

Re: Experts I Need Your Help

I've never had dial-up, it's been cable from day one. I could write a book on what
I put AT&T through in the few years they provided cable before selling the division
to Comcast.
Being on hold for 45 min. was the beginning of my wrath, and believe you-me, I WAS
reimbursed.
I had and still remember their set in stone support protocol. When I called them I
told them straight out to toss it aside for someone else because I've already done
everything they were going to ask me to do. There were a few that wished they had
not asked me to humor them by trying the steps anyway, they did NOT go home a happy
camper.

I consistently told them I believed the cable modem was the problem and explained
to them how I came to that conclusion. They'd run a test through the cable to the
modem and consistently claimed the problems were not affiliated with their provision,
it was something on my end that they had no responsibility for.

The last contact I had with them for internet support I told them to get a field
tech out to my house, which they promptly stated I would have to pay for if the
problem was found to be inside the house. The first thing the tech did was look at
the modem, he mention it was outdated and not being provided to customers anymore,
tested it and found it to be dropping out and replaced it. Before leaving he gave me
a roll of cable, two boxes of connectors and enough splitters to connect every TV in
the house. I never had an AT&T tech here thereafter.

The last contact I had with AT&T about questions with my business line, after
answering my inquiries they stepped directly into sales pitch mode. I told the
person I was not interested and when/if I was I would contact them. I guess that
meant to them they could pass it to someone else who could explain to me the benefits
of what they were pushing. That was a very very big error on their hand and I'm very
very positive that more than one person met their worst nightmare that day. By the
time I was done with them I had gone through 3 levels of upper management.

If I ever have to call them again, I'll bet the lowest person on the totem pole
will be the only one in the room because everyone else suddenly had to take care of
something else in a different building.

I've had to call Comcast only 2 times in all the years they've been providing the
service. Both times they sent a tech out after running their line test even though
the test came up negative. Both times they found a split in the cable outside,
promptly fixed it and went on their way.
