Windows Registry Rebuilder error

When I run the registry rebuilder it gets 85 % complete and then says it
cannot fix a file error and aborts. My Win98SE machine seems to work fine,
so is this message a reliable indicator of a serious problem ?

Re: Windows Registry Rebuilder error

Known problem having to do with size of Registry. Nothing to do about it,
just stop using the tool.

Re: Windows Registry Rebuilder error

Thanks Gary,

Can you recommend an alternate tool for defragmenting the registry, or is it
best to just leave it alone ? I do clean the registry of obsolete entries
from time to time.

Re: Windows Registry Rebuilder error

I'd continue as you are now. Clean as you feel like it (I presume you are a
cautious man), forget about "defragmenting" or "optimizing".

Well, OK, if you really want to get anal, there's the old Export/Import
trick. And that's all the hint I'm going to give.

Re: Windows Registry Rebuilder error

....and FWIW, I recall reports that trying the old Win95 compacting method in that
situation resulted in getting an error also, so it may be best to just fagetaboutit.

Re: Windows Registry Rebuilder error

Fair enough, thanks for the support, I was kind of worried something might
have been wrong, but apparently not.

Re: Windows Registry Rebuilder error

The problem is usually the result of having a system.dat file (the system portion of
the Registry) larger than about 9 or 10 MB.

I have also had this issue, but you are probably referring to the
scanreg /fix command where the registry is rebuilt. You may still be
able to use the scanreg /opt command which removes the spaces where
items were deleted thus compacting the registry. There is also a
scanreg /restore command if something goes wrong. Notice the space
before the slash.
