Spell checker problem

I just went through the experience of a hard drive failure and when I got a
new hard drive installed and my system back alive I found that Outlook
Express won't do a spell check. The spell check function limits me to French
only, and since I don't know or use French this is of no benefit to me.

When I open Tools > Options then click on the Spelling tab I see the slot at
the bottom with the words French (France) in it. The drop-down for this slot
has no other languages listed.

The spell checker works okay in all my Office 2007 applicaitons, and it goes
through the process of doing a spell check in Outlook Express, but calls
every word misspelled because it doesn't match any words in the French spell
checker dictionary.

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP 2 and MS Office 2007 along with a few other
programs such as Adobe Photo Shop. All these programs seem to be working
right and Outlook Express works very well except for the spelling check
problem.

I don't believe the Spell Checker that comes with Office 2007 is compatible with OE6.

You'll need a third party utility.

Apparently. Office 2007 is new to your system.

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook
Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system:

Office 2007 breaks OE's spell check. Downloading a free spell check is the
simplest way around this.

Outlook Express does not come with its own spell checker. It used the one
installed with Office. Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to remove this feature
starting with Office 2007. Take a look at these articles for more info;

After installing Office 2007 RTM, you don’t have English as a choice of language
in the spell checker of Outlook Express and potentially other programs.

Yeah, http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird

It comes with an excellent spell check, junk mail filter and it's free.
Outhouse Distress is no longer being supported by Microsoft so either
use the Outlook if it came with Office 07 or Thunderbird, both of which
will be supported in the future. Thunderbird will import everything from
OE if you elect for it to do so during the installation.

Thunderbird will give your cat warts. If you don't have a cat, you should be
okay.

Thanks to all who responded. I guess it's time to discard Outlook Express
and try to adapt to Outlook. I am wondering if I can import my Outlook
Express messages/address book into Outlook for a trial run and still use
Outlook Express if for some reason I don't want to stay with Outlook. In
other words, will importing these into Outlook also delete them from Outlook
Express? Gordon

I have used the Vampirefo spell check for years. It works just fine. There
may be plenty of other reasons to abandon OE, but IMHO, don't just base it
on a spell check.

Messages remain in Outlook Express when you move them to another program.

Import your messages or account from Outlook Express to Outlook.

It's really an incredible situation. The problem is well-known and stems
from the fact in that the problem arises after the user installs the MS
Office 2007 program and continues to use Outlook Express as his/her mail
program. Now the user finds that the spell check function in OE brings up a
French dictionary (although I have heard of at least one user who reported a
German dictionary!) so that the spell check function in OE becomes useless
for English-speaking users.

There's been a whole series of articles published on the net re this problem
and all sorts of explanations as to why MS has failed to correct this
situation knowing full well the problem exists.

In any event, the common workaround that many, if most users have found is
to use a (free) third-party spell checking program (in English!) - Spell
Checker for OE 2.1. (There are others). It seems to work fine based on the
experience I & others have had with it. A fair number of websites carry the
program for download - one of them being...

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook
Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system:

Office 2007 breaks OE's spell check. Downloading a free spell check is the
simplest way around this.
