Did you uninstall IE6 SP1 /prior/ to reinstalling WinME?

My question notwithstanding: Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM
and scan | Uncheck (deselect) KB837009 and "hide" it.

No, I did not uninstall anything before reinstalling WinME.

I don't see what you mean by hiding KB837009, I don't recognize that in my
(Dutch) version of WU.

Do you mean that I don't need to worry about WU offering this update any more?

How did you reinstall, did you do a clean install or did you install over
the top because if you did you may have ended up with what they call version
soup, which is why Robear asked if you had uninstalled IE6 before hand.

So you did 'over-install' onto your existing WinMe system (probably from the
windows\install or CABS folder). Thus, you will now have the 'version soup'
which Joan referred to.

Take a look at Noel Paton's page :-

However, you *may* find it easier (quicker?) to undertake a fresh 'clean
install' than to try to disentangle the IE6 and Media Player 9 'soup'.

If you do go for the clean install, BACK-UP your data first and be sure to
look at (and print out) the "cleanhd.txt" file in the win9x folder on your
WinMe CD (and in the install folder mentioned earlier). You can also view
the "Windows Millennium Edition Cleanhd.txt File Contents" at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;271673
Study it carefully and be sure you have a note of your 'productid' code (the
25 digit code that is supplied with your CD - or use Belarc Advisor from
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html ) and - if your WinMe CD is an
'upgrade' version (rather than a 'full version') - some proof of a 'previous
version' - e.g. your Win98 CD (N.B not required for OEM)

Hello guys, Mart and others,

Thank you for all the information. After doubting some time whether or not
take any further risks (?), I decided to follow the directions of Noel Paton.
I did as follows:
- install and run latest versions of Lavasoft and SpyBot
- delete c:\windows\system\wmploc.dll
- run ie6remov.bat and ie6ermov.bat and ie6remov.reg
- run scanreg /backup, but I'm not sure it worked well
- start from WinME-diskette in minimal mode
- run c:\os\win9x\startup.exe
- three times automatic restart during setup
- first normal start gave an error on HP directcd
- system stopped responding
- manual restart in safe mode, with automatic scandisk
- restart again in normal mode; everything looks working normal (including
HP directcd)
- run ie6setup from disk; after some while it stopped, saying is has not
installed:
* Internet Explorer 6 webbrowser
* package for off-line surfing
* browser changes
- automatic reboot
- ie6setup automatic asking to continue; I gave it a chance; it stopped with
the same messages
- automatic reboot again
- I cancelled ie6setup

So far no problems any more. I'm running IE5.50.4134.0100 now.
In a previous attempt I got IE6 installed by first removing the folder
c:\program files\internet explorer\uninstall information, but I don't want to
do it again by myself.
Outlook Expres 6 shows inetcomm.dll and msoe.dll both 6.00.2800.1478.
WU advises me:
- IE6 SP1
- security updates KB888113 and KB891781 for WinME

I would like to have your advise what to do next, before making soup again
;-).

Hi Coen, well at least you appear to have made some progress.

From this distance, I'd be inclined to continue with the options offered on
the WU site and go for IE6 SP1 from the site (rather than disk) and (all)
other updates available - one at a time if necessary, doing (or confirming)
an SR point before each one. Step SR back if an issue arises

Hi Mart, it may appear so, I'm not sure about that progress:

- I first selected WinME security updates KB888113 and KB89171 to install
- after reboot both appear in the installed history, but KB888113 also is
offered again to be installed
- I selected IE6SP1 from the windowsupdatesite, but it ends with the same
message as before: "not all components installed, reboot and continue"
- KB88113 as well as IE6SP1 appear in the installation history, AND are
being offered again as essential updates to be installed

What's next?

Not too sure Coen, but I suspect that you may still have some remnants of
the 'soup' on your machine.

I vaguely recall there being issues with at least one (KB89171 rings a bell)
if not both of those updates about 3 or 4 years ago, but can't remember
what. If Mike M is watching, perhaps he can recall? Didn't MS re-issue it?
I seem to remember plenty of chatter about it on the news groups, but as it
didn't affect me, I didn't keep any notes of the issues.

Until or unless some one else chirps in, I can't really help further - other
than a clean install (ouch!) - except to suggest you try MS Knowledge Base
(e.g.
http://support.microsoft.com/search...+fails&catalog=LCID=1033&1033comm=1&spid=6519

or try Googling "ie6 sp1 install fails" and/or "KB89171"
