Re-building WinXP - Mystery "PCI Device" and mystery "SM BusController"...

Re-building WinXP - Mystery "PCI Device" and mystery "SM BusController"...

Hi

I am rebuilding my Windows XP Pro (OEM).

When I check my Device Manager,
( Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager )
...I find there are errors:
"? Other devices:
? PCI Device
? SM Bus Controller"
...with yellow ? marks.

The only card that I think I have in the box (judging by the outside)
is Matrox Millenium graphics card (see below)

Is it likely that it is causing the "PCI device" error??
Because it seems to be working fine (as far as I can see...)

Also can anyone tell me what a "SM Bus Controller" is and what
I should be downloading to fix that too?

SM Bus controller driver should be part of the Chipset driver package
for your motherboard. The PCI device is likely a Modem or on-board
Sound Controller chip. If you enable DevMgr_Show_Details variable
you'll get a "Details" (TAB) when you open the properties of the device
in Device Manager. It will show you the Device_Instance ID that contains
a string of text that identifies the Vendor and Unique ID for the hardware.

I downloaded something from Intel (Intel Chipset Device Software)
that seems to have removed the "SM Bus Controller" flag

Sorry to be dumb but how do I "enable DevMgr_Show_Details" ?
Is that something in the registry?

It's a System Environment Variable you add the name and
then set it's value = 1. System Properties, Advanced ( TAB),
Environment Variable button, button section for System level.
You may not need to do that just visit the Motherboard vendor site
and locate the drivers for your motherboard. All the built-in or on
board devices should have drivers posted there.

(I think it was Control Panel > System > Advanced >Environmental
Variables > System Variables
And then I hit New, entered the variable and gave it a value of "1". )

So I now have a Device Instance ID of
"PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27D8&SUBSYS_02028086&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&D8"

Crikey. Now what?

Okay I'm guessing wildly, but I used that link from Colin to

and I reckon 8086 sounds like Intel. If so then my next guess is that
(using this URL
http://www.pcidatabase.com/vendor_details.php?id=1302 ) that the
device is 27D8
which comes up as:

Okay on this page:

...I managed to get this driver to download and install:

"Audio: Sigmatel* (IDT*) 92XX Driver (19491KB)"
But it hasnt actually changed either the "?" against PCI.
Nor is there any Audio Device installed apparently.

So then I tried downloading: "Audio: Sigmatel* (IDT*) 92XX Audio
Drivers"
... and HURRAY - it works. We have sound folks.
And that ? has gone from Device Manager.

P.S. How come these things are still QUITE so hard?
