I have a W2K server setup with terminal services. The users have been
using RDP with XP Professional and Vista Business for the past year, to
connect to this server. We have a new machine (HP) that came with Vista
Home Premium on it. The user has been using RDP to access the terminal
server without any problems until a couple of weeks ago, they updated
Vista and whenever they would access the TS, they would get a message
that the TS License was going to expire in X number of days. The license
has expired and I checked the TS event log and it reads "The Terminal
Server cannot issue a client license." The Vista machine displays a
message "The remote computer disconnected the session because of an
error in the licensing protocol." None of our other machines are getting
any messages like this. What would be the problem?

TIA

You need to purchase Terminal Server CALs for XP Home and Vista Home OS.
These should be installed on your Terminal Server License Server.

Patrick:

If I go to the TS Licensing Manager, under the existing Windows 2000
License selection, it has unlimited licenses available. I see the Vista
PC was issued a Temporary license. Shouldn't the Licensing Manager
re-issue a perm license, when the temp one expired?

TIA

But those free licenses on the licensing server are not for "Home"
versions of XP or Vista. They need a purchased TS CAL.
That's why your Vista Business client has been able to connect with a
free TS CAL and Vista Home is not.

Vera:

I also have a MAC user that I am pretty sure I need to purchase a CAL
for. Where can I purchase these?

TIA

Re: W2KTerminalServer\VistaHomePremium

Terminal Server Client Access Licenses (TSCAL) can be purchased from any VAR
(Value Added Reseller), i.e. CDW, Dell...

If you currently have no purchased TSCALs, it would be in your best interest
to install a 2008 Server with the Terminal Server Licensing Service and
purchase 2008 TSCALs to support this Terminal Server. As far as I know
support for 2000 Server ends this year, so you might want to plan to migrate
to a supported OS like 2003 or 2008.

Re: W2KTerminalServer\VistaHomePremium

I just got done with this same issue, but the user had never tried accessing
my TS server yet so no temp license had been issued. When I installed my
device CAL on my server and had the user connect, my licensing server gave
it a built-in license. I can only assume that the remote user was incorrect
and thought they had Windows Vista Home Premium...I don't know. I didn't
worry about it.
