Re: Ok Seriously. What is the problem(S) here?!!

Follow up post...

It's been 6 months now since I've switched to Mac.
here is my assessment...

wtf was wrong with me that I didn't do this sooner?! I am SOOOOO much
happier with my computer now than I have been in years!

Just bought my 2nd Mac yesterday. A top of the line 'custom configured
17\" MacBook Pro' (http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html). Eagerly
looking forward to it's arrival and also looking forward to trying some
of the great Direct X 10 only games (like Crysis) out on it's 2.6Ghz
Core 2 Duo 45nm goodness. Should run great with the 4GB of RAM and the
Nvidia 8600M GT with 512MB video memory.

'My 1st Mac' (http://www.apple.com/macmini/) has been delegated for TV
Media Center duty now since it was a little underpowered for use as a
primary machine. My Mac Mini now serves up all my DRM free uncompressed
DVD rips (with full menus) from it's 4TB worth of Firewire800 connected
external drives to my 46" LCD TV via Apple's elegant "'Frontrow'
(http://www.apple.com/imac/software/frontrow.html)" interface (Think
Windows Media Center but better) or I can surf the net on it with the
built in 802.11N wi-fi from my couch with the bluetooth mouse and
'keyboard' (http://www.apple.com/keyboard/). 'Check it out here.'

Sound cool? Well it did all this out of the box with _*no*_ mucking
around, tweaking, or driver hunting. Plugged it into the TV, it worked.
Tried to play a ripped DVD, it worked. Tried to set it up on the
network with wi-fi... Oh wait... I didn't have to try, it already _was_
connected to the net without me having to think about it! This is the
kind of joyous stress free kind of experience I've longed for, for
years! And now I'm living it. The time I save on messing around with my
computer trying to get something to work is COMPLETELY TANGIBLE. 'And
I'm not alone in this opinion'

I can honestly say that If you walked up to me right now with $100,000
in cash and offered it to me if I went back to Windows XP or Vista and
swore never to use a Mac again, I would literally turn and walk away
laughing.

I haven't needed to turn on my old PC even once since I switched. I
thought for sure I would need to use my PC at least once a week. I was
wrong.

It took a few weeks of adjusting to all the differences, new shortcut
keys and functionality but boy was it worth it for the stability,
reliability, quality, and overall sexiness of these Apple products.

Can't believe I used to HATE and mock Macs. Now I understand why all
those Mac users seemed to be elitist snobs. It's because they're right.
Macs ARE better.

Way Cool

Way Cool

I've been using Windows based computers for over 20 years. Been using XP
and Vista and didn't really think about the MAC until a friend of mine got
one. He showed me how the MAC just works. The applications all work
together, and the MAC has an Intel processor so it can also run Windows.

Since I develop Windows software and need to use Visual Studio, this perked
my interest. I also wanted to do video editing and looked into it
seriously. At the beginning of February, I purchased a MAC Pro and it's
just a dream. Very fast, all the programs work together, the OS is great.

I purchased a Virtual machine software product on the MAC called VMWare
Fusion. This allows the creation of a Virtual machine to run any OS you
want.

If you wanted to run Ubuntu (I don't know why anyone would), or XP, or
Vista, it can be set up and run in a window on the MAC.

I set up two Virtual Machines. One with Vista Ultimate and the other with
Windows XP Professional. They both seem just like a windows machine but are
running on the MAC. I can switch between any window, share data, and share
the printer. Way cool. I wish I had come across this before.

I get the benefit of all worlds. The MAC is just wonderful, my testing with
Vista can continue, my software development between XP and Vista can take
place between all platforms. What a great idea.

Congratulations on your purchase. I am a MAC convert and I get to use
Windows on the same machine.

What a great country.

The nice thing about MAC is you can run whatever virtual machine you want.
If you don't like Vista, don't use it.

Alright, you were doing so well there for a while, don't insult me. You and
I both know you'd snap that 100 grand up in a heartbeat. I certainly would.

Sexiness? Come on, now! No one buys a computer because it's "sexy".

What about software? MAC versions and all that?

Re: Ok Seriously. What is the problem(S) here?!!

First of all you paid a ridiculous amount of money for a Mac didn't you ??
and by all your spent money you can't really do all that much for the money
can you ??...I built this Vista system that does all that and more for
probably less than 1/4 of the money you spent on one of your macs...I have
used Macs before and still have one of those old doorstops around...Vista
has some problems but not on this machine !!

Yea I know exactly how you feel ! Bill Gates came to my house dragged me
to Best Buy with a gun pointed at my head and MADE me buy Vista.

Your forgot to add the line "Salesman, MAC Systems" to your sig. A
question: What are you doing in this newsgroup rather than some MAC group?
I am even more convinced now, than I ever was, not to switch to MAC after
that sales pitch.

Jasonh1234,

Yes, Apple makes very good computers. They look very nice and are made
quite well. I have used them here and there over the past few years and I
must admit I've been quite impressed with them, especially the OS X equipped
Apples. I can certainly understand why someone would want to buy a Mac.
Security? The security features of a Mac are sufficient for the most
part but the OS is still subject to the same exploits that affect Windows,
provided the malware writers choose to write one for the Mac. More and more
exploits are being written every day for all the Linux platform based
operating systems, of which Mac belongs. A security conscious user will
probably not be affected by any of these exploits in the first place,
regardless of the operating system. I just get sick and tired of hearing all
the "buy a Mac and never worry about viruses" talk, or the "buy a Mac and
you don't need antivirus and antispy applications", which is hyperbole at
its best.
Mac OS X, as any Linux operating system, doesn't allow me the free use
of activeX controls, which make things easier for me and allow me to use
programs I cannot use on a Mac. By not allowing the use of activeX controls
the Linux systems are closing a gaping hole in the security of a computer,
but by the same token activeX controls are completely safe to use if you
know how to use them. I foresee Microsoft not needing activeX in future
operating systems. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong.
Another reason I don't buy a Mac now is because Linux systems fall
short when it comes to the software applications I like and choose to run.
Yes, there are numerous quality software applications that work very well on
a Mac, but the ones I prefer are made by Microsoft and other vendors for the
Windows OS. People will say "just run Windows in a virtual environment in OS
X". If I do that, why don't I just run Windows in its own operating system
to begin with? Makes sense to me.
OS X is certainly aesthetically pleasing, but then again, so is Windows
Vista Ultimate. I don't want to get into the Apple stole from
Microsoft/Microsoft stole from Apple argument. That's the way business
works. I think Windows is much easier to use than a Linux system so I choose
Windows, aesthetics aside. In any event, I don't spew hatred and contempt
toward Linux users in the way it is heaped upon Windows users by the Linux
crowd, of which Mac is a part. I'll never understand this hatred and
animosity.
Last but not least, let me tell you the real reason I won't buy a Mac
anytime soon. I abhor the elitist attitude of many of the Mac users. It's as
if they think they belong to a special or exclusive country club. I get the
genuine impression that they feel they are better than people who use
Windows. Anyone can belong to this club of course, but first you must be
willing to overpay for the product. Nobody is refused acceptance but Apple
cannot justify the price of admission, the price I must pay for their
products. It is way out of line for what I receive for my money and I refuse
to pay it. I don't belong to the elite "Mac crowd" or the more elite "iPhone
Club" and I don't feel cheapened or left out in any way. I'll just continue
to use my Windows and Motorola, thank you.
What are my feelings toward Mac users? I wish them all the best. They
have wonderful computers with a very nice operating system and I'm glad they
don't suffer the consequences of all the malware written for Windows. I know
they will be very satisfied with their computers for years to come and I
hope they have no problems of any kind. What do I think of Steve Jobs?
Nothing but respect and admiration, especially for his decision to come back
to Apple and rescue it from oblivion at the hands of the former CEO, and at
a salary of $1.00 annually. Yes, I know how much he is worth, but his
genuine desire to save and improve his flagship company vastly overshadows
what he earns with his stock, options and investments. I wish him well.

C.B.
