New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME

Hello:

I noticed on another group a message that AVG has just released a new v8.0
of its' anti-virus product.

Unfortunately, the new v8.0 does *not* support Win 98/ME - only Win 2K and
up.

However, at least for the moment, AVG Free v7.5, which does support Win
98/ME, remains available.

But at some point, if AVG follows past tradition, AVG Free 7.5 will be
replaced with AVG Free v8.0.

See:
http://www.grisoft.com/ww.product-avg-anti-virus#tba2
and
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/us/frt/0#details .

Cheers,
O.J.

Re: New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME

Hello again:

I meant to note that the AVG v8.0 announcement seems to leave Avast! v4.7 as
the only remaining free anti-virus for Win 9x/ME.

Also, does BitDefender Free Edition v10.0 still support Win 98/ME? (Note
that the BitDefender Free Edition is an on-demand scanner only - as I
understand it, it does *not* have an on-access scanner.) (
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Downloads/browseEvaluationVersion/1/?dwn_id=42
..)

Are there any other free anti-virus programs that still support Win 98/ME?

Thanks,
O.J.

I like Avast better anyway, because it works efficiently and sufficiently as
well as all on it's own, once installed.

Re: New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME

OK, I'm replying to myself again <g>.

BitDefender v10 apparently does support Win 98/ME. See:
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/view/Products-for-Win98-Me-NT.html .
However, the new BitDefender 2008 only supports Win 2000 and up. See:
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-2194-en--BitDefender-Antivirus-2008.html
..

It seems like we are losing anti-virus (and other security software) for Win
98/ME.

Sigh,
O.J.

Re: New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME

And Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic dropped support for Win 98/ME in
mid-2007 and now only supports Win 2000 and up also.
See: http://www.free-av.com/ .

How long can we hope for Avast to continue to support Win 98/ME?

O.J.

OJ....go to the above link for older programs. I often put this link
out on this group for the very reason that it has copies of older
programs. And yes, when I use Zone Alarm, I use an older version even
on XP. NEW is not always BEST!!

Re: New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME

Hi Heather:

Thanks for the link. The only problem is that with anti-virus programs, some
products, such as AntiVir, are no longer supplying definition updates to
their last Win 98/ME version.

Cheers,
O.J.

Re: New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME

Hmm, quite true. But on the other hand, I don't think the virus writers
remember that there really IS a Windows Millenium O/S......grin. I
didn't worry about viruses all that much when using it and I am trying
to remember which one targeted XP and Win2000, but not WinME.

Not a huge consolation, but if you keep an older one on the machine and
watch where you surf, you should be just fine. One thing I have always
done to virus-proof my Outlook Express is to make up a Message Rule that
diverts any email with an attachment into it's own folder. I can then
approach it carefully (no preview pane).

Cheers.....Heather

Re: New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME

Hello Again:

I just got a couple of replies on the Avast! forum. The Avast! v4.8 in beta
(v4.7 is the current version) will support Win 98/ME.
And the Avast! v5.0 that is in development will continue to support Win
98/ME, although (some) of the new features will not be available on Win
98/ME.
However, that is the case currently, as the Network Shield, introduced in
v4.5, works only on NT-based Windows systems.

Good news for you Harry! You get to continue to use the latest versions of
Avast! for the future, well at least the near future, anyway.

Cheers,
O.J.

Like Zone Alarm and CCleaner had versions that were as best as they
could get (IMO) for Win ME

Anti-virii progs can be so overrated.. I mean.. I don't even remember the
last time a virus was detected on my winme pc. As long as we do the
common-sense things (avoid clicking on links and attachments in unsolicted
mail, and check for hidden file extensions), the risks are fairly low.

By the time winme and win98 have no further anti-virii programs available,
we would all be using Linux anyway, right? ;)
