I posted the following on the WGA forum and received the reply at the bottom
of this thread informing me to post this on this forum instead. Please help.

I try to run a manual update and it says it has to validate windows. It
then errors that saying that if the active x bar doesn't appear to validate
the optional way. It validates and says it's sending me back to the update
page and this continues over and over. I ran the diagnostic and it hangs at
the windows activex line. All others pass. I downloaded the validation
diagnostic tool and it works. Here is the result

Why am I caught in this loop? I've emptied the temporary files, cookies,
history - everything. I've restarted several times and nothing works.

CrystalBall© sez...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Re: Microsoft Update fails and gets in a loop

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you are telling me. I did not do a
repair of a windows XP installation.

It was working just fine before and now it isn't. Do I need to do a new
install? Please be more specific.

Re: Microsoft Update fails and gets in a loop

I ran the steps in the article you referenced and they did not help. Method
1 completed but I still got the same problem. Method 2 told me it was
already installed.
I tried turning off the Trend MIcro security and running it and still no
success.

Re: Microsoft Update fails and gets in a loop

You receive an error code and the copy of Microsoft Windows is not validated when you try
to use Windows Genuine Advantage to validate your copy of Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908440

You cannot download Windows Genuine Advantage updates on a Windows XP-based computer that
you purchased from an Original Equipment Manufacturer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914225

The Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation check process does not complete when you
try to validate your copy of Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905226

When you say you cleared out the temporary internet files, did you also try renaming the
softwaredistribution folder?
