Rename server name with TS Licensing installed

Hi,

Is TS Licensing server tie to the host name? If I need to rename the
server, do I need to call clearing house to re-activate the licenses? We
have a TS Licensing server with 4000 XP complimentary CAL. I was going to
build a new server and transfer the CAL to the new server. When I called MS
clearing house, they said can't transfer comp CALs.

There are some data on the this server that I'm moving to a new hardware but
for those data to work, I need to keep the same host name for the server.
Since I can't move the CALs, I'm hoping I can just rename the license server
to release the host name for the new hardware. Will I break TS license
server if I rename it to something else?

Thanks.

Re: Rename server name with TS Licensing installed

Depends on the detection method used.
If your Terminal Servers currently autodetect your TS Licensing
Server, then renaming the LS shouldn't make a difference.
But if you hardcoded the name of the LS into the registry of the
TS, or configure the LS in Terminal Services Configuration, then
you have to change it.

Re: Rename server name with TS Licensing installed

So the licensing piece is not tie to the hostname in any other ways than what
you've described? I hard coded IP address of the licensing server on TS
servers so it should be fine to rename, yes?

Re: Rename server name with TS Licensing installed

It should be, because that overrides al other discovery methods.

Documented here:

Re: Rename server name with TS Licensing installed

Yes, I've read that piece but my concern is if the activation of the license
server or the CAL has any tie-in with the hostname?

Re: Rename server name with TS Licensing installed

To the best of my knowledge, there's nothing which ties the CALs to
a specific hostname of the LS, but I have never tested this
personally.

I really don't think you have to worry about the "comp" licenses. Sounds
like the "free" licenses issued by TS 2000 license server. Are you
running TS 2000?

Once the new server is running and detected/used, it will start issuing
temporary (comp?) licenses to any and all XP workstations. No need to
transfer any licenses.

Of course, if you are talking about free CALs issued during the grace
period for transitioning to TS 2003, then you should ignore the previous
..... ;-)
