Windows Vista DVD Movie isn't recognized by Vista x64 Ultimate

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 and I am trying to get this American Heart
Association DVD to play on it. On my laptop I have Vista Home x86 which can
read it perfectly fine (it plays in WMP); however, my x64 computer doesn't
recognize it as a disc. If I go to "browse" the drive, it asks me to insert
a disc.

I have no real software differences between the computers. I can read other
DVDs (Desperado, etc.) perfectly fine. It's just this one DVD I can't get to
run. I'm not sure about the format of the disc, whether it's UDF or not.
I'm just perplexed as to why the DVD isn't recognized.

I've got a Samsung SH-S182M DVD-RW drive. I've set it to Region 1 (US) and
still no joy. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think you fully understood. I can't even get to the DVD, much less
play it in WMP. So a codec may be something I need (I highly doubt it) once
I can view the DVD; however, the system doesn't even recognize that I've put
a DVD in the drive. It acts as if it's an empty drive, when in reality, it
contains a DVD.

I'd try replacing the drive. (Since other drivers seem to work OK with the
DVD in question.

I had a similar problem with one of the older Sony DVD RW drives. Turned out
that it would work ok in Linux, and not in Win XP on the same PC. Some
investigation showed that the drive was being recognized as having a faster
interface data mode than it really had.
While I don't think that this is the problem in your case, it does
illustrate that the drives can cause some really strange problems.

Well, I can't exactly do that since I don't really have the cash to do that.
I'm 99% sure this drive used to play DVDs. I can't see why it wouldn't play
a DVD now.

Did you ever get a resolution to this problem? I am having the same problem
with my DVD player. Some of my DVDs will play, no problem. But others won't
be recognized when I put them in to play. I keep getting a message that
there is NO DVD in the player, when in fact, there is. The DVD player came
with the computer and it's only about six months old. When I put some DVDs
in, I can hear it grinding away, trying to read it, but for some reason it
just won't "see" the DVD.
