I have one w2k ws that takes a long time to shutdown. Is there a way to
check it out to see what might be causing it?

try this

start
run
type
gpedit.msc

navigate to

Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
System
Logon

Maximum retries to unload and update user profile ...

set enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!
