Anyone know if it is possible to install RIS on Win2003 R2? We now have a
need to migrate service from older system, but desired target server already
at R2, RIS not installed previosuly, and I can not seem to get around a WDS
install in Native mode (which does not support the existing RIS images). Any
help is appreciated.
Thanks, Bill

Yes you can, just run legacy Deployment instead of Windows deploymentr and
you'll get what was the old RIS Service

Phil - I recognize you can run such a mode if RIS installed prior to
upgrading to R2. To restate my question - can you install WDS to run legacy
deployment mode (RIS) if your server is already at Win2003 R2 prior to
installation of WDS/RIS services? And if anyone knows if possible, how are
install steps performed?

RE: RIS and Win2003 R2

Thats what we are running. The server I built is Windows Svr 2003 R2 Ent
Edition x64 + SP2. We need to deploy to several different O/S targets
including legacy win 2000 svr, thus we simply run legacy Deployment sevices
instead of regular Windows Deployment. Legacy is essentially the old services
circa Win Svr 2003 (non R2)

RE: RIS and Win2003 R2

Hmmm - so you built to Win2003 R2 without RIS/WDS, then installed WDS
services, and it worked running legacy? Interesting. I cannot, and included
doc makes me think not possible (i.e. table of how to get to various configs
does not include this process). I will have to investigate further. Thanks

RE: RIS and Win2003 R2

NM - I'm a goof. I reinstalled, now have avail the "WDS Legacy" startup icon
you describe. Not sure how deleted earlier but that was my real problem -
could only launch the regular "WDS" prgm.
Thanks for the help and patience Phil.
