New (11/2007) Dell laptop using Vista home basic. Frequent unexpected
shutdown error messages. Sometimes when in Mail, or Excel, or just the
wallpaper up and no applications open. Laptop always plugged in to AC
adapter. Contacted Dell. Restored to factory image 2/11/2008. Unexpected
shutdowns started 3/2/08 and 7 since.
Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.2
Locale ID: 1033
Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 101
BCP1: 00000060
BCP2: 00000000
BCP3: 83073120
BCP4: 00000001
OS Version: 6_0_6000
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 768_1

C:\windows\minidump\mini030808-01.dmp

If I could read the dump file, maybe I could figure this out. Dell is no
help yet. Thinks it is software. Where is dumpchk.exe for Vista?

Thanks, Betrina

Betrina,

If Dell thinks it's software... what software did you install after the
restore to factory image? If none... then it's Dell's problem and you need
to push them on it.

Re: unexpected shutdown dell laptop

The Dell guy based his comment on the fact that I ran all the dell
diagnostics on the laptop before restoring to factory image and no problems
were found. Added software: Google Earth; Turbo Tax 2007, 2004, 2003; Word
2000; Excel 2000. No added hardware, except a basic usb mouse plugged in. I
downloaded Microsoft diagnostic tools (dell guy tried but could not. I don't
think he is very experienced), but when I try to read the mini dump file, I
get "debugger is not using the correct symbols" error.
There is a dumpchk.exe for XP to read minidump files. Is there a dump check
utility for Vista?
The Vista reliability report for the times of unexpected shutdown just says
"OS stopped working". Not much help there.

I don't know if there's a dumpchk for Vista. I can only assume you're trying
to use the XP dumpchk and thusly are getting the error you've listed above.

Found this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...41-c458-46f1-b24d-f60151d875a3&displaylang=en

Only Vista version listed is Ultimate... so don't know if it would work on
other flavors. Kinda odd, but worth looking into, maybe.

Unfortunately, I think you might need to do a factory restore and run your
box without installing any additional software to validate that it's a Dell
problem or not. Do factory restore. Run system. (Download something like one
of PC Mag's benchmarking tests, which you can set to run and hammer the
system.) Install one app. Rerun tests. Install second app, rerun tests...
etc. Hard to determine the best order in which to install the apps... (The
best order being the order which most quickly discovers the problem app, if
there is one...)

I know that sounds like a lot of work, and indeed it is. But if Dell is
telling you it's not their problem, you have to prove otherwise.

Sorry to hear you're having such problems. I have Vista running on two Dell
Latitude D620's here without issue. And I've run it on quite a few other
Dell model types without issue. Not a big help, I know... very frustrating
what you're going through.

Re: unexpected shutdown dell laptop

I was using the diagnostic tools from the microsoft website, which said the
tools are for vista. Not dumpchk.exe. Anyway, Rick from this site looked at
my mini dump for me. Looks like a software problem, "system driver file
being loaded by svchost.exe that is causing an issue with the kernel." My
husband has old Turbo Tax software installed on his laptop. I uninstalled
versions prior to 2006. Maybe this will solve the problem. Although the
unexpected shutdown does not always occur while using Turbo Tax, unless the
OS continues trying to load an old version driver, even after he had given up
on it working. No errors this weekend, and he was NOT doing taxes this
weekend, so maybe that's it.

Well... good luck with that. Not sure why one would need to continue to run
TT 2003 (or whatever) but am sure there is a need. (Not being an
accountant...) One can only guess that TT's older versions might be
inflicting some offshoot of "DLL Hell", even though that's not supposed to
occur in Vista.

At any rate, really... good luck figuring out the root cause of your
problem. Let the NG know of your discoveries.
