I am trying to install an activex add-on from a website and initially it is
blocked i try to install it and I get a message "WINDOWS HAS BLOCKED THIS
SOFTWARE BECAUSE IT CAN'T VERIFY THE PUBLISHER" is there a way around this?

RE: activex add-on

LostOnVista,

This may or not help you. On the downloaded file right click it and select
Properties. Click on the "Unblock" button and try to install it. If this does
not work, right click the file and select "Run as Administrator".

Have a nice day.

Re: activex add-on

Try closing all instances of IE, then right-click on a shortcut to IE, and
choose Run as Administrator. Then go to
http://hoylegames.sierra.com/games/wordox.jsp and try to install the ActiveX
control...

Re: activex add-on

thanks for your speedy reply dean. i did as you instructed, however the
option to 'run as admistrator' was not available to me when i right clicked
the shortcut.

i am fairly new to vista and understand the logic and importance of the UAC,
but know little on how to modify any settings. i am the only user of this
computer.
much thanks
janet

Re: activex add-on

The option to Run as Administrator should be available when you right-click
the Internet Explorer shortcut in the Quick Launch area of your Taskbar, or
the shortcut in Start Menu > All Programs, or you could navigate to
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer and right-click the file iexplore.exe.

Re: activex add-on

i had to first reset the admin function. after doing so, i was able to see
the 'run as administrator' when right clicking on the shortcut. as expected
i ran into the same problem. the error message is always the same: "Windows
has blocked this software because it can't verify the publisher" still won't
work..... thanks for trying anyways.

Re: activex add-on

I have the same issue with Windows Vista wanting to block an ActiveX control
I WANT TO INSTALL. It is annoying me to no end. MICROSOFT should explain
this CRAP not just take control away from us!!

Still don't know how to intall this. Any help that allows me to by-pass the
blocking of the ActiveX control I WANT would be of great help to me. I am at
a web page that wants to install an ActiveX control that will allow me to
observe chess games being played at a chess site.

Re: activex add-on

You should start with opening your IE7 then goto "Tools" "Internet Options"
then press on the "security" tab and scrolldown till you see ActiveX
controls and plug-ins now "Enable" those content you want activeX to handle

Re: activex add-on

Steffen,

I checked and "ActiveX controls and plug-ins" is enabled. However, other
items dealing with ActiveX controls where disabled so I set them to "prompt"
me when available or "enable" when that and "disable" where the only choices.

I wish I knew more about what each affected. Anyway, I hope that I will not
be so rudely blocked in the future when I want to use or install an ActiveX
control that enables me to view chess games through a web page.

Thanks for your help!
