Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

Please note that users updating a single computer are advised in the text
"DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller,
more appropriate download is available on Windows Update." This download is
intended for users updating multiple computers, such as IT Professionals.

If Windows Update does not offer SP1 it is probably because the user has one
or more of the problematic drivers that SP1 cannot reinstall. In such cases
the user must manually reinstall the driver. If so, it is better to just
wait while MS continues to resolve these issues with the respective
manufacturers. By mid-April SP1 should begin to show up on Automatic
Updates one way or the other.

This wave is only for English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese. Other
languages will be available in the next wave as announced by Mike Nash at
SP1 rtm a couple of months ago.

Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

Now check WU. As I recall, the setup file writes a registry entry so that
WU will offer the upgrade. Maybe not, but I think that is what is going on
from what you describe. WU will ten query your system to see if you are
right about not having any of the problematical drivers.

Nothing there either. I have a pretty clean system. DV9000 series HP
Laptop. Not sure what could be stopping the download. I'll investigate
further when I get home. My network speed there is 10 times faster than my
Company T1.

Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

Thanks for the link Carlos!

I have downloaded the complete X64 SP1 file ( 726 mb). I wanted to have the
complete file on hand, just in case I needed it at any point in the future,
such as a reinstall.

I went to windows update, it showed an update for Defender, I installed it,
then it showed me the SP1 update available, with size being anwhere from
120 - 711 mb. I assume this would be determined, by how up to date my Vista
64 bit Ultimate is. I have all updates to date that have been offered to me
since installing Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

So anyways, does it really matter, which way I install SP1, either through
the complete downloaded file, or through windows update? I have heard some
say better using the file, others say it don't matter.
I am probably not going to install till have have some spare time on either
Thursday or Friday...

Thanks,

Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

Correct. 120mb would be for a fully updated Vista. MS recommends using the
WU method.

Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

Carlos:
Thank you for the download link. It took 26 minutes to download the
package and 53 minutes for the installation. On another computer SP1 was
available through WU, the update was 121.5MB, took 30 minutes to download
and 35 minutes to install. I have Vista Enterprise x64 SP1 on a disk since
it was available for download a few weeks ago. Have a great day.

Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

And, believe it or not, that is what I am going to do.
Sit tight and wait for WU to tell me that SP1 is right at my front door.
For the moment being, nothing shows up (motherboard is NForce 550 based
chipset and there might be driver issues with SP1).
But, as I am a pack rat (is that the English expression?), I like to have
everything downloaded and at hand when I need it.
I have in my HD every single update since Vista was released!
:)

Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

Sounds like a good plan. Since windows update is now offering it to me, I
figure I am probably good to go.
I may just use the complete downloaded file though, we'll see, going to wait
till have have some spare time to do this around the end of the week or so,
plus that gives me a chance to see some early reports.

Re: SP1 for Vista x64 out

I installed SP1 for my Vista Ultimate 64 bit early this morning, went
without issue. The install took me 32 minutes, from the downloaded SP1 file.
Not sure if I will see much difference in performance, as my system was
already performing very well.
I did notice, after booting up my hard drive does not thrash for 5 minutes
or so like it did prior to SP1.
I also like the fact, you can select individual volumes now for defragging
in the defrag gui.
