Is it true that Adaware is no longer supporting Win98se? What security
programs are people now using on their Win98se boxes? Thanks.

Though then new version Adaware 2007 may not work with win98
the old version AdawareSE can still be updated but it will have to be done
manually.
they carry the new definitions on their website
and they just need to be unzipped into your Adaware folder

Ok, I will try unzipping the AdAware updates manually. I did install
SpywareBlaster 4.0 but then I removed it because it seemed useless. I
use the mvps.org hosts file.

How do you do this? I downloaded and unzipped core.aawdef but AdAware
did not see it. I then renamed it defs.ref and AdAware rejected it.

Davej:

* Close Ad-Aware SE.
* Download the latest Definition File in ZIP format here:

http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

and save the file to a temporary location.
* Unzip the contents of the file either with a ZIP utility or
with the built-in support in Windows to the Ad-Aware SE installation
directory, which usually is "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\".
* Open Ad-Aware SE.
* Confirm that the latest Definition File is installed by
checking the "Initialization Status" in the main program window.

There was a recent discussion here on the procedure, likely someone will
provide that information again.

SpyWare Blaster provides some additional protections, takes no memory as
the modifications are made to the registry. So using it and a good HOSTS
file is like layered protection AND some additional protections [the updates
provide newly found problem sites], which may not be included in a
downloaded {and likely not updated, as you would have to do so} HOSTS.

Ad-Aware manual updating :
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

Unzip the contents of the file to the Ad-Aware SE installation directory,
which usually is "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE".

If still having problems updating, go to
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE and delete the files
"defs.ref" and "defs.ref.old"

Note the def file needs to be inserted into the main Adaware folder, not
any of the sub-folders.
Windows will ask if you want to replace the "defs.ref" file.

Dave,

Try: http://www.superantispyware.com/

I have gone from Adaware to SAS, the free version, and it works just fine.

Give it a test run, at least.
