Linux still at 0.6 percent of the desktop market even though it is free,
has been around for at least 10 years, and now has more developers than any
other project.

The only thing Linux lacks is users........

So what's wrong with this picture?

Rubbish
a) Linux comes from Unix and both Run and Run and Run. That's what
Operating Systems should do.
b) There is a Big Move from UNIX Servers to Linux, The Unix's are Now
Linux Friendly.
This move was Massive in 2006, a little less in 2007.
c) One of the Benefits of a Mac is Mac-Osx which comes from Unix.

You are wrong right out of the gate. Not a good start. (Hint - Linux does
NOT come from Unix.)

Moving exisitng servers from very expensive *nix to linux is a no-brainer.
So where's linux on the desktop??? Nowhere.

Linux users do everything possible to steer the conversation away from
desktop Linux towards something more favorable to Linux.
Embedded devices, maybe servers, but anything other than the desktop.

Why?

Linux despite being free is still hovering around 0.6 percent of desktop
market share.
The BBC has it pegged at about 0.8 percent.
I think their numbers are high.

Actually PCs people don't care what it runs either. They primarily just
care that it works and does what it needs to...just like any other device.

Sure they care. Otherwise why aren't they using linux?

The difference is that a TomTom GPS, microwave oven, remote control, etc.
are all special purpose devices. What OS is running behind the keypad of the
microwave usually isn't visible to the user and they simply interact with
the special purpose device in a single well defined way.

Computers on the other hand are general purpose devices. Computers require
compatibility with printers, wireless cards, VPN software, iPods, etc. With
computers the user is often using the OS directly so the OS a desktop
computer uses is something that the user will often need to interact with.
Not so with a microwave or digital camera.
