Hey All,

I have been searching these forums since I installed Vista, and now that SP1
hasn't solved the issue, I am back to ask once again if anyone knows what to
do about this issue.

The issue is that ever since I installed Vista, it will randomly, without
warning, hang for about 30 seconds and then resume without issue.

Now, here are some responses that I know don't work, so if these were one of
your ideas, then sorry, but it's not a solution.

- Reinstall Vista (done)
- Change SATA to ATA (not possible with Dell Bios)
- Defrag HD (Done)
- Check for Hardware Errors (No issues under XP for 2 years)
- Virus program (does this when AVG isn't installed)
- Drivers (all up to date drivers, froze before nvidia/creative drivers
installed)
- Bios (Latest bios version from Dell)

I am currently running:

Dell XPS Gen 5
2 Gigs Ram
8800 GTS nvidia Graphics Card
Creative Autigy zs

I have watched the reliability monitor and event viewer and I am not seeing
any errors at the time of freezing.

I really think this issue needs to be addressed because in my search of
these forums and the internet, MANY people are having these problems, but no
one is explaining it well enough and so many of the answers are unrelated.

I encourage anyone with this issue to post here until a solution is found.

Thanks,

Jeff

Few things to consider as well.

When the hang is happening, I can still click on anything. It won't do the
request until the hang is done at which point it'll perform each action as I
clicked them.

MSN still works and I can type during the hang.

It does it without warning and can not be reproduced.

Do you have an unused network card?

Not that I am aware of. The Dell shipped with it's internal card and that is
all that is in there.

RE: Vista - Hanging Randomly (for about 30 seconds)

Just had a hang. The music (WMP) continued to play. I checked the event log
and this is what I got.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the
IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005. This is often caused by
incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Operation:
Gathering Writer Data

Context:
Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}
Writer Name: System Writer
Writer Instance ID: {ac6d35e5-5c72-462f-b3f6-dc12aa3e1e1a}

The strange thing was the hang happened at 4:44, but the event log said this
error happened at 4:47.

Not sure if this means anything, or even what this error is.
