Can a Windows 2003 server offer dual monitor support for Windows XP or
Vista remote pcs? I can't use Citrix at this time. Something really low
cost might be an option.

I am not sure what to make of the Mstsc /span option at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925876

I see that TS Client 6.0 is offered to me by Windows Update but I'm not
sure if it's simply a replacement for the TS Client that my XP Pro came
with, or something entirely new? Also Mstsc /span is for "monitor
spanning", not really dual monitor support...tho I'm not sure what that
amounts to? Some clients would need an ordinary single monitor RD
session and some would need dual screen support.

Think that Citrix is your best option, in the new ICA client there's better
support for multi monitors.
See the release notes to see which specific problems are solved in this
version.

Check this:

Can I use multiple monitors with my rdp session?

Re: Dual Monitor support, Windows 2003 Std, Win XP clients?

I've been able to get RDP 6.0 to span with an xp client, win 2003
server. But the 8 bit color would be pretty hard to live with. Is there
no way around this? No one will be moving to vista.

Also, spanning must be requested via command line? Seems odd that the RD
dialog wouldn't include a switch for spanning. I'd need to customize
every user's shortcut to take advantage of spanning?

Re: Dual Monitor support, Windows 2003 Std, Win XP clients?

I see there is a hotfix for the color depth issue

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942610

Still curious re the need for command line.
