Using Windows Server 2008 TS User CALs

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question. I have just purchase a 5-pack of TS User CALs for
Windows Server 2008 Std. I understand that i can use these with Windows
Server 2003 Std, due to downgrade licensing. Can anyone confirm this?

If so, is there anything in particular that I have to do in order to enable
the 2008 TS User CALs so that they can be used with Windows Server 2003? Are
there any side effects from doing this?

I haven't tested this scenario personally, but it seems very
similar to the scenario where you installed 2003 TS CALs on a W2K
TS LS using your downgrade rights.
Should be no problem at all.
Only thing to keep in mind is that you will need to call the
Clearinghouse and get your licensepack re-issued when you switch to
a 2008 TS LS. But that shouldn't be a big deal.
Make sure that you store the paperwork for these licenses in a safe
place, though!

Vera,

Pardon me for the silly questions. Are you saying that I need to get in
touch with the MS Clearinghouse should I need to swap the licences back to be
used with a 2008 Win Server, should I go down this path in the future?

As far as installing the 2008 TS User CALs to the 2003 server, is it just a
case of using the license codes from the 2008 TS Users CALs pack and
inputting them through the installation wizard? Am I required to do anything
else?

Again, I can't be sure, haven't done this.
But that's the procedure for 2003 TS CALs installed on a W2K LS
using downgrade rights and later using them as 2003 TS CALs.
Basically, you need to install the licenses afresh to change the
scope, and you can't install the same license pack twice. So it's
equal to just moving your licenses from one LS to another.
But again, some of the above might have changed in 2008.
