Gurus,

Just ordered a Dell laptop with Windows XP 64-bit edition. However, the
only antivirus software which can be placed on the laptop from Dell is
32-bit versions. Is there a 64-bit antivirus software out there?

Hi,

Avast http://www.avast.com

NOD32 http://www.eset.com

Avoid Norton/Symantec and MacAffee on anything.

"Avoid Norton/Symantec and MacAffee on anything."

Why?

I am running Norton 2008, it is 32 bit, but seems to run fine so far on
Vista 64.

Re: Is there a 64-bit antivirus software out there?

Personally, I think Norton and McAfee, are both very heavy on execution.
Ties up the system noticeably. You pay good money for them, and still they
carry restrictive license's. In contrast, Avast! has kept me well protected
for several years now on a free license - it updates up to several times a
day and it is extremely lean on system resources.

I wouldn't contemplate going back, even for a nano-second!

Several of the regulars here are equally happy with this, and the
alternatives.

Re: Is there a 64-bit antivirus software out there?

I have been running Norton 360 for a year and now, and Norton 360 version
2.0 for a month - both on Vista Ultimate 64-bit - flawlessly. In fact, the
new 360 combines both a security system and a "tools group" that all work
fine on 64-bit (albeit in 32-bit mode). But, I believe Norton even works
fine with the 64-bit Explorer (except for their "anti-phishing" feature).

Re: Is there a 64-bit antivirus software out there?

Because...
1.- Behemoth sized software
2.- Resource hog

I have been using Avast for a couple of years and feel quite satisfied with
it.
I install it with its defaults and I never notice it is even there.

McAfee you should avoid like the plague. I had to put up with it on a
corporate network once; it was setup by domain policy (so I couldn't
override) to full scan *every* file on *every* read, write, attribute
change, sneeze, sideways glance at, thought about, imagined thought about,
etc. Every file. Even 6Gb VMware image files, 70Gb MySQL database files,
etc. The hard drive light is on solid all day and a 2Ghz box runs like a
300Mhz one. It also has the worst known detection rate of the pop
commercial antivirus products in testing - less than 60% iirc. The free
ClamWin is better for your security.

(these hits from google on "antivirus shootout")

Norton/Symantec is significantly better for your security, however its
memory footprint is atrocious. Go out and stick a few more Gb of ram in
before using this gargantuan beast! Also as a power user I think its
interface sucks. Probably best left to old people with lots of money for
the ram they need & no IT nouse, whose last virus infection was Influenza ;)

From experience I can recommend Kaspersky Internet Security on Vista x64.
I'm waiting on Eset and F-Secure to make 64-bit versions of their products.
It's always useful to have more than one method of protection.

I've using AVAST as well. The only annoyance is it talks to you. I use
earbuds so I usually don't catch the "virus database updates"
announcement.

I will admit that the viruses it catches in my email would never in a
million years get opened by me. Like I'd open an unsolicited
attachment from a sender named Sextracker. But who knows. I get
blaster 2 to 3 times a week.

Re: Is there a 64-bit antivirus software out there?

Go into Program settings/sound and disable either all sounds or select a
less annoying one.

Found it. That should save me the whoop whoop whoop when it find a
virus.
