Re: Video Capture for Vista 64-bit?
Hi, Cari.
Thanks for posting that! It motivated me to try again to get my
WinTV-HVR-1600 working for analog TV channels, as well as digital.
I downloaded the new MCE_CD_31G.ZIP and ran its Setup.exe. I was surprised
and disappointed that it finished installing so quickly. Looks like all
that really gets updated is the Infrared receiver driver. Then I saw that
the Installation Guide says it's for the 1600 "MCE Kit". That is, the board
that runs on MCE, not on Hauppauge's standalone application WinTV2000. The
connectors shown on that Installation Guide are different from the ones on
my hardware, which I bought in January, and which is the HVR-1600 with no
suffix. The MCE Kit apparently comes with a USB cable and a separate box
for the IR's remote control; my older card has a mini-jack to plug cable
directly into the card. The new IR32.exe software is for the new IR system,
not for my old one. So that part of my day was a disappointment.
But, in studying the old and new Installation Guides, I realized that the
OTHER coax input on my card is where I must plug in my antenna to pick up
analog (NTSC) channels. On the MCE card, both connectors are labeled "TV
Connector", but both have subtitles, too. One says "for Cable TV input";
the other says "for ATSC digital TV antenna". On my card, the first says
"TV Connector, for Cable TV; the other says "ATSC Digital TV connector".
I've been using this other input, which is for ATSC and receives only
digital channels.
I don't have cable TV, but the guy who built my house installed cables to
every room for use by the cable company. So I have TV cables without cable
TV. (Does that make sense?) I've connected my omnidirectional antenna in
the attic to those cables. So my over-the-air reception comes to each
room - and to my computer - via those ordinary coax cables.
I moved the coax cable to that input that says "for Cable TV" and voila!
Analog TV! ;<) I have a second tuner, a Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick, which
plugs into USB, uses the same antenna (via a splitter), and gets ATSC
digital channels.
So, now, for the first time, I'm able to watch both analog and digital TV
channels on my computer. ;<) Now all I have to do is figure out how to get
my IR remote control working with MCE. NEITHER Hauppauge nor Pinnacle TV
software will run on my Vista Ultimate x64, so I have to use Vista
Ultimate's Media Center to use either or both of the tuners.
Those Installation Guides have pictures and should be clear as a bell - but
they leave me SO confused! Until I've figured out what they mean, and then
they seem almost as clear to me as to the folks that wrote them.
Anyhow, I can now watch on my computer about a dozen analog channels and a
half-dozen digital channels, and I can record one while watching another.
;<)
