Time sync - What if pdc emulator crashes?

My PDC emulator is setup to get time from an external time server. All of
the other domain controllers will get their time from the pdc emulator. What
if the PDC Emulator crashes? Where do the domain controllers get their time
from?

Hello mhowell,

If the DC crash, then you have to seize the FSMO role to another DC and configure
this one with the exeternal time source.

I know what you have to do. I am wondering what the other domain controllers
would do to get their time. Would they start using their own clock? What if
you change the domain controllers from NT5DS to NTP and point them to an
external time server?

Re: Time sync - What if pdc emulator crashes?

Until the other domain controllers can contact the specified time source, you
will see some errors in the event log every time they try to check their
clocks are uptodate. All the servers and pc's use their own internal clock
for determining what time it is, they only use the specified time source
periodically to ensure their internal clock is correct.

Unless you are running some finaical software that requires the time to be
absolutely precise down to the nearest second, then you will have more
pressing issues to deal with, i.e.: the crashed DC.

Hope that helps.
