Re: WSUS 3.0 Uninstall problem

All,

There was a posting:
https://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2172429&SiteID=17&pageid=0#2172429

Which refers to utilizing "msizap" from the SDK for removal of WSUS. I
currently have an instance where I (too) need to remove WSUS 3.0 SP1 (x64)
and then re-install. However, even with removal of those items that appear
to be WSUS - it fails. In my case, I run the .exe to install WSUS 3.0 SP1
and it prompts to uninstall WSUS. The 'native' uninstall process fails every
time. I'm unable to get to the point where I can re-install WSUS.

If you review the above URL - it appears that msizap (from the SDK) will
remove those registry items that relate to the product. However, I'm unsure
of the appropriate product ID to utilize for this purpose. Does anyone know
the correct product ID for WSUS? What additional actions need to be
performed to ensure a clean removal of WSUS, such that WSUS can be
re-installed?

THANKS!

MSIZAP needs to be run twice...... from the original instructions:

2. From a command prompt, type:
For WSUS 2.0: MSIZAP T {A0D46DC6-8950-451A-8990-53C86E17666E}
For WSUS 3.0: MSIZAP T {2C0D7E35-EE6E-4DC7-BA13-2C68AEDEB59D}

3. From a command prompt, type:
sc delete wsusservice

4. Again, From a command prompt, type:
MSIZAP T {2C0D7E35-EE6E-4DC7-BA13-2C68AEDEB59D}

And while step 4 doesn't list the WSUS2 command, I suspect WSUS2
installations would need to use the WSUS2 GUID in step 4.

Re: WSUS 3.0 Uninstall problem

Re: WSUS 3.0 Uninstall problem

First off - thank you for the quick response.

I did run the msizap -> sc delete -> msizap as listed in the posting for
WSUS 3. The output in both instances from msizap doesn't appear to show that
any action took place. Just various instances of "searching" without any
other actions. For clarity, I did a 'copy-paste' to avoid any typos and
double checked it visually to ensure that the msizap command line matched the
posting. Today I re-ran the process just to see if for some reason there may
be some change in action or event - nothing.

Some information that may (or may not be helpful):
Windows Server 2003 R2 (x64)
WSUS 3.0 SP1 (x64 version)
WSUS was installed with the internal database engine option

When running the downloaded install program ("WSUSSetup_30SP1_x64.exe"),
after performing removal commands, it still attempts to perform an uninstall
that fails. My assertion is that after running msizap/sc/msizap is that it
would execute and provide standard prompts to install - no? If there is some
additional information that may help to ascertain what is happening and why
msizap isn't removing wsus?

Again - Thanks!

It may well be that the x64 version has a different product key.

Look in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

and find the subkey with a DisplayName similar to Microsoft Windows Server
Update Services 3.0. The name of this subkey is
{2C0D7E35-EE6E-4DC7-BA13-2C68AEDEB59D} on the 32-bit version, if the 64 bit
version is different you'll need to adjust the MSIZAP command accordingly.

Harry.
