I am experimenting the new EasyPrint feature of 2008 and so far am very
impressed. However, I am experiencing a problem when printing to XP SP3
clients. XP seems to mess-up all of the character spacing and changes
typeface from Times Roman to Ariel.

When sending to an XPS document on the client, the XPS file is correctly
formatted when viewed and will prints out correctly, when printed directly
from the client.

I guess this is just a bug in the XP SP3 implementation of EasyPrint, as SP3
is still at RC1. Vista SP1 doesn't have this problem.

I would like to know if other people have also experienced this problem with
EasyPrint?

Re: TS EasyPrint to XP SP3 client

To use the Terminal Services Easy Print driver, clients must be running both
of the following:
• Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 6.1
Note: The RDC 6.1 (6.0.6001) client supports Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1.
• At least Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Are there events present ?

Re: TS EasyPrint to XP SP3 client

Thanks for your comment, the client workstations have both RDC 6.1 and have
the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 installed.

The problem only exists on the Windows XP (SP3) machine. Using EasyPrint in
Vista works a treat.

I have replicated the problem by creating a new Windows XP Virtual Machine
and upgrading to SP3 RC2, then installing .NET 3.5 Fully Windows/Microsoft
Updated. When I connected to the 2008 TS, EasyPrint brought over the XPS
Document Writer from the XP VM. A test page to the XPS Writer, caused the
client XP machine to prompt to save the XPS document. On the XP VM, opening
the saved XPS document displayed a correctly formatted Printer Test Page.

But, then I installed PDF Creator on the XP VM, again connected to the 2008
TS. EasyPrint displayed the PDF Creator Printer. The test page performed
the expected actions, however the final PDF file that was created on the
workstation was not formatted correctly.

To confirm that it wasn't a PDF thing, I reverted to a snapshot of the VM
without the PDF Creator installed, then installed a USB HP All-in-one
printer. The printed test page looked exactly like the PDF file, with
incorrect fonts and character spacing.

Now I guess it is possible that the HP Printer driver and the PDF Creator
may have an incompatibility with EasyPrint. I know that my colleagues have
never got this particular printer working from a 2003 TS session.

I must admit that I have not checked the XP Windows event logs. I will
check this again and maybe try a different printer.

RE: TS EasyPrint to XP SP3 client

I have dug out an old HP LaserJet 4L and EasyPrint works fine with driver
supplied with XP.

This must mean that EasyPrint has issues with integration with some printer
drivers. The printer that I can confirm definately didn't work was an HP
OfficeJet All-in-One 5610 using the latest driver from the HP website.
