Sounds like a DNS/name resolution issue, and potentially a HOSTS and/or
LMHOSTS if using that file. There may also be an issue with your firewall
and router.

Check your proxy settings in IE, and your network, firewall, and router..

Thank you for the help. I will disable (rename) my hosts file and
will give that a try.
I do not have a firewall installed on my computer. Not sure what my
ISP has.

How do I check the proxy settings (I dont have one of them either that
I am aware of). As far as router, I am lost. What does that mean?
I connect via an external 56K USR modem, via phone line. I know I am
connected, since I can get email (Eudora), and newsgroups (Agent), but
like I said IE just hangs for a long while. At the same time, Firefox
goes right to a website.

Thanks

Okay, though taken with what you present below, it may not help.

| I do not have a firewall installed on my computer. Not sure what my
| ISP has.

Only people who don't THINK they need a firewall, go without one. You may
want to scan for viruses and malware as soon as you can and install one.

|
| How do I check the proxy settings (I dont have one of them either that
| I am aware of).

Go to IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > , then check whatever
your connection is first, then check the LAN settings, which may or may not
have a proxy setting. Let us know.

Also, you MAY need to check your actual TCP/IP settings in Networking for
IP DNS and Gateway settings. What ISP do you use?

| As far as router, I am lost. What does that mean?

Its a device which handles IP packets/network traffic by addressing. Don't
worry about that if you're on a phoneline, you don't have one.

Well, we have some experts on IE, perhaps they can provide more relevant
info on its quirks...

IE 6 must be fully updated. Is it?

I once installed a Firewall. I cant recall the name of it, it's a
popular one. I removed it a few days later. If I had to live with
all the nag screens that thing presented to me, I'd toss the computer
in the garbage and take up golf (and I hate golf).

I only use educational websites, I dont download pirated stuff, dont
go to porn sites, and any freeware/shareware I download, I manually
virus scan it before I open it.

The only thing checked under IE > Tools > Internet Options >
Connections > LAN settings is "Automatically Detect Settings".

I just have my local phone company's ISP. That's all there is out
here in the country, (without being long distance).

OK

I have noticed that sometimes Agent (for newsgroups) hangs too, as
well as Eudora for my email. Seems this all started after I ran the
Win98 install on top of itself, after I had a problem, which turned
out to be a bad keyboard and nothing more.

Running SFC from the START > RUN, I see numerous files changed, but
which are from upgrades, or software, I have no clue.
I did replace one file that was older than the original Win98 file,
and updated the entry for DEFRAG which I know is changed because I
installed the faster one that came with Windows ME. Otherwise I have
no clue what to do.

I DO NOT have any viruses or spyware. I just ran all the checks.
AVG, Spybot, Adaware, as well as cleaning registry with Regseeker, and
defragging.

NO, the only updates I can find on the MS site are for XP or vista.
I dont believe they support 98 anymore.
The install CABS are all dated 12-17-2007 in my IE6 install file.
That should be one of the most recent, I'd think.....

There have been sporadic warnings by certain MVPs at this site that an
over-install of Windows can lead to DLL-hell & other sundry problems, if
done very long after a fresh install or when you have updated to newer
DLLs. Others have not always agreed. I take no position on it, but...
maybe an over-install of IE will set your IE DLLs right...

(1) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"
It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E
are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is
indicated. If you are not cured, go for the over-install.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177
Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool

(2) Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's
"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &
disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking
"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end
task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from
top, & skip it next time.

(c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.

NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more
than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows
Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.
