Re: Disk Defragment Error
Still running WinME.
I noticed that even in SAFE MODE scandisk was being interrupted.
control-Alt-Delete processes showed nothing running.
Wintop gave me the impression that one of the drivers
even in safe mode was interrupting.
I am suspicious that the LAN card was seeing pings from
the cable modem and interrupting...
(next time I'll try the pause button on top of the modem that quiets
all activity.)
That something would interrupt it in SAFE MODE surprised me.
Sometimes if scandisk doesn't work even in SAFE MODE
the next move is to boot to the DOS prompt with the STARTUP DISK
and run the DOS mode scandisk ( check out the option flags )
DEFRAG seems to be more tolerant of applications interrupting it.
Since there is no DOS mode defrag, I use a free ( no beg!) program
called Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel 2.8 to temporarily
turn off all drivers and SW (check marks) and put them all
back after the Scandisk or DEFRAG or both are done.
I find that program to be extremely handy for Quicktime.
It's all set up on the computer, but turned off.
If a web site USES Quicktime it always sets itself up
as a task that remains active, AND sets itself up to be
active at next boot. I keep a shortcut to STARTUP on
my desktop.
It's pretty much replaced the Start/RUN/msconfig routine..
I hope this helps.
