Well, I'd consider it in bad shape when a developer who has spent 10
years of his life writing nothing but software for windows and who
couldn't give a rats ass about linux now uses linux nearly exclusively.
Namely myself...
Now granted, it primarily is advances that linux has made in the past
12-18 months that receive a lot of credit for that, but it's vista that
deserves the credit for being the trigger.
Vista is the first MS OS I did not and as of this day simply don't want.
DOS->Win95 I happily upgraded.
Win98->Win2k I happy upgraded.
Win2k->XP I paused simply only due to the fact that, pre-SP2, the only
thing it offered over Win2k was a childish color scheme until MS forced
me to upgrade by making Visual Studio 2003 XP only. However, I never
actually had any problem with XP other than it's childish color scheme
and I think many would probably not disagree on that. Over Win98/ME
though, which was probably the case for the general majority, XP was
definitely the way to go.
Vista though? I mean, why? The only thing it offers over XP is to be a
royal pain in my ass. And yes, I've had it installed and used it. It
seems many people I meet also don't particularly care of it. Come to
think of it, aside from people in this NG, I've yet to find someone that
actually likes it.
Ironically, the other week, we had a MS Consultant in our office. I
chatted with him for a while and we started chatting about my new system
and the new severs I put up, all linux based and how many machines in the
office are going to be converted to linux systems in the future.
His response? He fully agreed with me, saying himself that when he wants
systems that are trouble free he prefers linux. Yup, this is coming from
a MS consultant.
Yes MS is selling Vista but is that really an accomplishment? I don't
think so for the simple reason that it's going to come bundled with every
PC whether people like it or not. People don't go out and buy "Vista",
they go out and buy a Desktop/Laptop. It happens to have Vista on it. In
many cases, if you want XP, you have to explicitly ask for it and the
model selection available with XP may be limited and may not match the
users needs as far as hardware goes. So seriously, how much of an
accomplishment any number of licenses sold when ultimately, there isn't
much of a choice? It's kind of like a gas station bragging about the
gallons of fuel sold...well no ****, people need fuel...they're going to
buy it whether they like it or not...
Also the statement floating around that now supposedly there will be
another windows release in a year makes it seem to me that Microsoft is
scrambling to do something about it. I have my doubts that it's actually
going to happen but...
So do I think Vista is doing good? Nope I don't. Of course, this is all
just my opinion and in the grand scheme of things my opinion isn't worth
two ****s. Only time will tell how things are going to turn out.
What I'd like to see, which of course is never going to happen, is that
every machine be sold without an OS. No pre-installed Linux, no pre-
installed Windows, no pre-installed MacOS. All machines sold clean and
the OS then bought and installed by the User.
I'd love to see how Vista would fare in *that* scenario because really,
that's the only way to compare apples to apples as it puts all OS' equal
to each other. The user truly is the one who makes the choice in that
case.
Note to various assorted fanboys: Don't even bother responding unless
you've got something intelligent to contribute.
