Hi,

we've just installed a new printer server (Windows 2003 R2 Stdandard
English). We installed all the needed drivers, and added all the printers
(TCPIP ports). Everything seems OK.

Then we've told our users to add the printers by adding 'network printers'
in their computers. Everuthing is fine excepting one thing: the user can
apparently change the 'printer setttings', but when he clicks OK on his
changed printer settings and print, we see that they are not saved. In fact
if we just save the printer settings and re-openn it, we see that they are
the same, the default ones.

This shouldnt be the behaviour of this print server, users should be able to
personalize their printer settings. Weve tried to give the users all the
permissions in the printers in the server but this gives the same result.

What is happening?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

RE: problem with Printer Server (Windows 2003 R2)

Hello,

Thank you for your post.

According to your description, my understanding is that you have installed
a new Windows Server 2003 printer server. After you added the printer as a
network printer on your client PCs, you found you couldn't save the changes
to this network printer.

If there is any misunderstanding, please let me know.

Analysis and Suggestions
========================

To narrow down the issue, please first answer the questions below:

1. Did this issue occur only on one of your client PC or it also occurred
on other client PCs?

2. What settings could not be changed or any settings under printer
properties could not be changed?

3. Could user print from client PC to printer server correctly?

4. If users login using Administrator account, could the changes of printer
settings be saved correctly?

As this issue might be caused by permission settings and network connection
related reasons, please try to do the following steps to fix the issue.

1. Restart Print Spooler Service.
To do this, please:
1). Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" in the open box and click OK.
2). Right click the service "Print Spooler".
3). Click Restart

2. Delete the printer and follow the below steps to add the same printer as
a Standard TCP/IP printer using the IP address of the printer server.
a. Click Start and select Printers and Faxes.
b. Under Printer Tasks, click Add a Printer. Click Next.
c. Select the Local Printer attached to this computer radio button.
d. Uncheck the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer
check box.
e. Click Next.
f. Select the Create New Port radio button.
g. From the Type of port: drop down list choose Standard TCP/IP Port. Click
Next. Click Next.
h. In the Printer Name or IP Address box, enter the IP Address of the
device.
i. Click Next. Click Finish.
j. Choose your driver. Click Next.
k. If you want this to be the default printer, click Yes. If not, click No.
Then click Next.
l. Select the Do not share this printer radio button. Click Next.
m. Leave the Print a test page (recommended) button checked. Click Finish.
n. When asked if the Test Page printed correctly, click Yes.

After that, please check whether you could save the changed printer
settings and print a test page correctly.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Yes, he can print but he cannot choose settings different from the default

No, even if user is local administrator of the PC the settings cannot be
saved

This was the way we were working, all the users had local printers that in
fact were tcp printers. Now we changed this so all users installed the
'network printers' that are local to the printer server.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: problem with Printer Server (Windows 2003 R2)

Hello Fran,

Thanks for your update.

I performed some tests on my side; however, to locate the root cause, I
still need to collect more information for further investigation.

1. Are your Client PCs in an AD domain environment or in a WORKGROUP
environment?
2. How did you configure the security settings of the shared printer? (For
example, you give a specific user full control to print, manager printers
and manager documents and logon using this user account.)
3. Which settings do you want to change? Please let me know the details or
give me a screen shot.
4. Which printer has this problem? Please let me know the exact printer
model and driver so that I can try to reproduce this issue in my lab
environment.
5. Does this problem exist for all printers or a specific printer?
6. Does this problem exist for all users or just some specific users?

Meanwhile, please perform the following tests:

1. Please logon as a user which has Administrator right on the printer
server. Does it work?
2. Please test if there are some changes that could be saved or any changes
could not be saved.
3. Please also test whether the same settings could be saved on printer
server.

Thanks for your attention and I look forward to hearing from you. : )

Re: problem with Printer Server (Windows 2003 R2)

Hi Jian-Ping

Finnaly we managed to solve the problem. We noticed that with a specific
printer this wasnt happening, so it was perhaps because of a driver issue.
We updated all the drivers of all the printers and the problem vanished!

So everything is OK now.

Thank you anyway for your help!

| Hi Jian-Ping
|
| Finnaly we managed to solve the problem. We noticed that with a specific
| printer this wasnt happening, so it was perhaps because of a driver
issue.
| We updated all the drivers of all the printers and the problem vanished!
|
| So everything is OK now.
|
| Thank you anyway for your help!
