Hello all,

I've been having problems trying to install 5 out of the latest 8 Windows
updates on two Dell PCs since yesterday afternoon. Both machines are
running XP Home SP2 with IE6 and have been kept fully patched.

The updates are failing on the download, even before installation. These
updates are:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB948590)

Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP
(KB947864)

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB945553

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB944338)

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941693)

I've already tried the following commands prompts listed below:

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

regsvr32 wups2.dll

net start wuauserv

exit

The last part of my Windows Update log is included below.

Thank you.

Alan

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these installed in the past 30 days?

Re: Failure to Download Updates

Hi PA Bear,

I'm running Spybot, AVG 7.5 Antivirus, SuperAntiSpyware, WinPatrol and
SpyWare Blaster.

I use the built-in Windows firewall.

Other than updating the latest signatures for these anti-virus/malware
applications, no new applications have been added since the Windows Updates
in March.

Thanks for the tip. After I made the original post -- including the log that
I copied/pasted from Notepad into Word -- I realized that there were
double-spaced lines and that I should have first copied/pasted the text back
to Notepad (in effect, Paste Special) before copying/pasting into my O/E
newsgroup post.

Re: Failure to Download Updates

Hi again PA Bear,

Right after I posted back, telling you what anti-virus/malware applications
I had installed, I temporarily disabled SpyBot's Tea-Timer and went to the
Windows Update site again.

All remaining updates then downloaded and installed successfully.

Thanks for leading me in the right direction.

YW.

I'd leave Tea Timer disabled if I were you, especially with either Defender
or STUPIDAntiSpyware installed. See http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=32409
for instructions.

Well I'm no computer geek, but I managed to solve most of my own computer
problems. So, please allow me to offer these suggestions: Make sure your
cashe is clean; along with the history and deleted files. Turn off any pop
up blocker soft ware, down load only from a Microsoft friendly search
engine-IE; finally temporarily turn off Windows firewall during these down
loads. Hope these suggestions are usefull.

Re: Failure to Download Updates

Hi weath_erhead,

As I posted to PA Bear on April 10, I solved my problem by temporarily
disabling SpyBot's
Tea-Timer and going to the Windows Update site again.

Once I did that, all remaining updates then downloaded and installed
successfully.

Thanks for your response.
