Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and

I've see and read and tried, your hotfixes - 894391 & 927891 to no avail. I
originally thought this computer was coupted, so fresh reload, then after
during the last of Win updating the error message returned:
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to
close.
Error signature
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : msi.dll
szModVer : 3.1.4000.4039 offset : 00027tb8
The following files can be included
C:\DOCUME~1\Auti\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER15d1.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Auti\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER15d1.dir00\appcompat.txt
and while at update website, during scan for updates if the error message
doesn't appear the computer shuts down. Sometimes it restarts OK and
sometimes it restarts after doing a recovery from fatal shutdown.
Whats next to try? I have 4 other computers here and no problems with them,
yet.

I just went through a very similar situation with a laptop...new, clean
install of XP pro, all seemed to work OK but the update, which at times did
work, but other times didn't, with the generic host services errors related
to msi.dll and others. I went through the hotfixes, registering dll's,
reinstalling the updater, etc. Finally I got a few restarts from blue
screens and found a clue.

I'd suggest downloading and running the Windows memory diagnostic tool
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
You download it to make a boot floppy, or an ISO to make a bootable CD, then
boot from it and let it run.

If that's not it, it won't hurt anything; if it is, it can save you a lot of
grief. In my case, the memory was brand new and up to specs, but the
computer was running it at the wrong RAM timing specs for CAS etc. While it
seemed to run XP and Vista fine except for those host services errors on
occasion, the memory test was plagued with errors.

For a 'second opinion', download memtest+
http://www.memtest.org/
also free and makes a bootable CD or floppy. In my case, both showed
extensive errors in most tests. Mine is a laptop with no provision for
changing the settings, but if you're on a desktop or laptop with better
access to bios settings, you may be able to change the memory timing
settings (not memory speed per se, but the 4 number RAM timing settings,
that will be in a format like 5-5-5-12 etc.)

Of course maybe your problem is elsewhere, but it sure rings a bell when you
describe what you've gotten so far.

Thank you - It was the RAM memory, my son recently upgraded memory from 512
to 3gb. I reduced it to 2gb and reconfigured it in the slots - no more error,
scans for updates and downloads now without issues. Again thank you
