Hello Everybody,

I am facing a rather strange situation. I have setup an enviroment with a
couple of servers one of which is acting as a file server. It is an HP
DL-380G4 with RAID5 and Windows Server 2003 R2.

The symptom is that even on the server console (since it is happening on the
clients too) when you try to browse from one folder to another, sometimes
there is a noticable delay. The symptom exists on the clients side too (Win
XP Pro SP2) more often along with a long delay when they try to save, even a
small word document.

This server used to act as a DC, DNS, DHCP but after many tries to find out
what is going on, finally I've removed these roles to another server in
order to reduce the load. But unfortunately the problem still exists.

The only role the server has right now, exept from the FS role, is that it
has the Symantec System Center consoel for the Antivirus.

I had enable folder Quotas but I've removed them hopping that would solve
the problem. No luck!

The server has two NIC's in a team and most of the folders storing the data
are quite big (10 - 80GB).

Any ideas or anyone have face anything similar?

Thanks in advance

Andreas

RE: Slow browsing within folders

Recently replaced an NT server with 2003 R2 (albeit on somewhat faster
hardware) and was pleasantly surprised with the speed at which it indexed the
140,000-file document store (about 2-4sec over the network) I get the
impression it would have been faster than NT even without the hardware
upgrade. So, no you've got a problem here, it shouldn't be sluggish.

Putting the AD on a server is a definite performance hit, but shouldn't
bring it to a crawl. Main impact seems to be very slow startup/shutdown
compared to a vanilla server.

One possibe reason here is that the disk controller isn't using DMA. That
makes things very slow, AND loads-down the processor during disk activity.
I'd have a look at the controller's properties in Device Manager.
