Hi guys

Sorry to bother you all with this, but a does anybody happen to know
which was the last version of Real player to work on 98se?

Best regards

Tony

Re: Last Real Player

I don't know, but then again, do you really need or want the last version?
I've been using Real Player version 8 upto now, so I know that one still
works (or worked) (although I haven't been using it much recently, truth be
told). Another idea for consideration is Real Alternative. Maybe their
website (or a google search) will tell you the version compatibilities.

RealPlayer 10, perhaps?

I dont know, but I want to warn you, Real Player can really screw up
Win95 and 98 (maybe other versions as well). RP has always been known
to cause problems. A one time it had spyware in it too, but that was
during the Windows 3.x era. I believe they removed that. Just
thought I'd let you know. I wont install it. I see less and less RP
videos these days. Most are not Win Media Player, or Flash (SWF or
FLV). Both of those work much better.

I am reluctant to install, I've been using Real Alternative for many
years, but for some obscure reason in won't install properly on this
m/c.

RealPlayer v.10.5 is dated 2004, is 32-bit, and works
flawlessly on Win98SE.

No good in what way? What happened when you installed it or tried to install it?

That dig sig date is for v6.0.12.1056 - RealPlayer10-5GOLD_bb.exe fwiw, but
there is also v6.0.12.1483 - RealPlayer10-5GOLD_bb.exe with a dig sig of
2/17/2006, and then don't forget about the non-bb/exe version which the
latest is v6.0.12.1663 - RealPlayer10-5GOLD.exe dig sig of 10/23/2007
I think the difference between ...bb.exe/or not is a bundle with Rhapsody,
etc, in it.

I had the same problem with the alternative. I could not get it to
install properly ????
At one time I wanted it, but I see very little RP videos these days.
I much prefer the .FLV files. They work nicely, dont eat up a ton of
resources, and rarely skip on this slower PIII 1000mhz puter. That
seems to be the way video is heading and I have no complaints about it
at all. RP seems to be a dying format, with WMP being the second most
used, and I cant say too much bad about WMP either, except I will get
some skkpping if I have much else running at the same time.

This is a non-intrusive stripped down version of realplayer that I used for
years on '98SE with absolutely no problems (you can ignore what OS's they
say it will work with, trust me). It never failed to play any realplayer
file I wanted to play and contains the innards to enable you to play the
latest version of embedded realplayer videos, at least it did the last time
I tried that. It is no frills to the extreme, so if you're into Rhapsody or
sophisticated music libraries and such, then you want something else. You
can list any email address - they don't send you a confirming email as a
precondition to get it working.

Re: Last Real Player

I should have added that, like the other versions of Realplayer I'm aware
of, this one inserts itself into you your active start-up apps and "phones
home" (I think it's called Tkbell and I also noticed another one,
"realsched"), and MS-config cannot get rid of it. However, it is relatively
easy to beat it by using the firewall to deny it the right to call out or
call in (at least you can do this with Kerio).

What I do is to replace this file ...

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

.... with a 2-byte do-nothing file.

You can create such a file using Debug as follows. Lines not beginning
with a space have wrapped.

C:\WINDOWS>cd "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB"
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB>debug

-a 100
12EB:0100 int 20
12EB:0102
-d 100 101
12EB:0100 CD 20
-rcx
CX 0000
:2
-n dummy.com
-w
Writing 00002 bytes
-q

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB>ren realsched.exe
realsched.bak

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB>ren dummy.com
realsched.exe

Re: Last Real Player

Thanks all for your as usual very informative replies :)

In the end I decided not to install RP, bloatware methinks! I'm just
gonna stick .rm files on my m/c that has got Real Alternative on it.

Thanks everybody.

Best regards

Tony
