Seagate is one of the oldest and most admired manufacturers of hdisks.
Their drives are used in IBM mainframes running all kinds of operating
systems.

Fix your precious Linux and for once get your facts straight you loser.

This is indeed a Linux driver problem. Presumably someone
is going to have to look into it and ascertain precisely why
Seagate external units disconnect from the main computer.

Helpful specifics would of course include:

[1] kernel version.
[2] Seagate model.
[3] other applicable circumstances e.g. heavy CPU
utilization, heavy drive utilization, long idle time,
inquisitive cat, large tri-legged attacking alien war
machines from the planet Mars, ...

I'd hold back on that conclusion until more information is available.
In particular, do other drives work fine on that system?

I had the same symptoms. I tried other brand drives, and even thumb
drives, and the problem persisted. That's because it wasn't the drives,
or the drivers. The USB ports on my motherboard went flaky. So I
tossed in a cheap ($10 or so) USB card, moved my drives over to that,
and everything has lived happily ever after.

I'd say Amen to that!

Almost all trouble with USB is with flakey connectors.
You can loose platers if you wiggle a portable HD USB lead.
Had they increased the length of the connector by 5mm, it would have
been a lot more sturdy.

Do other OSes work fine on that system as well?

So in your case it's a hardware problem. Interesting,
and logical enough. Of course the OP didn't make that
very clear in his post.

Of course one would hope for a printk() at least when
the USB flakes out, in the Linux case. Ideally, it would
then try to reconnect, though with flaky power good luck
on that.

I would presume absent more data that I'm doing exactly
that. Of course Roy is not responsible for the repair of
the affected drivers -- and others have indicated that
there might be a hardware complication involved.

possible repair of the Linux USB drivers. Or did you want
