Volume Shadow Copy Service causing system state backup issues?

Hello, I am having trouble with Backup Exec 11 d and I am wondering if the
problem is on my domain controllers instead of with Backup Exec. Here's
what's happening: The Backup Exec 11d "restore job properties" window is
displaying multiple copies of the same SS backup for domain controllers. For
example, I made one system state backup of a domain controller at 11:02 on
4/17/08. When I view the "restore job properties" window, I see three copies
listed, for the same backup at the same time. If I select any one of them,
all three copies become selected.

Could the problem be caused by an issue on the domain controllers, rather
than a problem with Backup exec? Note that this only happens with domain
controllers; other system state backups are OK and all other file system
backups are OK.

I ran Live update to ensure that the backup exec product is completely up
to date.I have also updated SQL Express SP 2 on the backup server, dropped
the Backup Exec database and reloaded from base, and renamed the catalog
folder, forcing it to create new catalogs. The last step of creating new
catalogs fixed the problem for a few days, but then it came back.

I tried reinstalling SP2 on one of the domain controllers, but that did not
fix it.
I have tried with and without the "use advanced Open file option" box
checked on the backup jobs and it make no difference. Could the problem have
something to do with the vss "writers" on the domain controllers?

Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Brad,

Did you talk to symantec support over this issue? Seems for me a BE problem,
maybe with the agents.

Re: Volume Shadow Copy Service causing system state backup issues?

Yeah, they are the ones that advised me to dump the catalogs and start over.
We thought we had it solved but the problem came back, so I am looking for
new ideas. Probably is a BE issue but I just want to check out all of the
possibilities.

Re: Volume Shadow Copy Service causing system state backup issues?

Hello,

This seems to be a Backup Exec issue, since as far as I know, there is not
any similar issue caused by the system (or Active Directory) itself.

However, for us to isolate the root cause of this issue, I would like to
suggest that you make a similar backup by using the ntbackup utility
shipped with Windows Server 2003 and see if the same symptom exist. If not,
the Symantec support may be the best resource on this issue as we have very
little knowledge on a third party product and I am fully aware how time
consuming this can be.

Thank you for understanding.

Re: Volume Shadow Copy Service causing system state backup issues?

Thank you George, I just contacted you on the remote change that this has
someting to do with Microsoft VSS, but I really do think this is a Backup
Exec issue. I started using NTBACKUP when the Backup exec problem started,
becasue I do not trust the system state backups I am currently getting with
BE. The NT backups work fine. Sorry to bother you, thanks for your response.
