Hi -
We had a server that we needed to demote. Due to some replication
problems, it would not do the dcpromo --- without adding the force to the end
of the command.
That seemed to be OK - except it changed it from the domain to a workgroup
server. I would like it to be a "member" server within the domain.
When trying to re-add it to the Domain, I'm getting errors saying the it
already exists... and it does... So I went to the current DC and was going
to remove the server name so I could readd it. Now I'm getting a message
about removing a DC - which I guess also makes sense, because it doesn't know
it was demoted.
Here's my question... which is my best choice???

Which of the following statements best describes the reason for deleting
this object?
I want to demote ths domain controler from the domain and contue using it a
s a computer.
This domain controller is permanently offline and con no longer be demoted
using the SD instaalation Wizard.

any sugesstions?
thanks -Cindy

Re: dcpromo /force problem

Hello Cindy,

Follow this one to remove all old entries:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

After that also check DNS server records, that it is removed and then try
to add it again, but make sure it is in a workgroup and not a domain.
