Looping reboot in XP with 3G RAM Longer Version

OK: I made a quick post the other night before turning in, hoping that
someone knew some quick setting that needed checked or something. I may be
able to mess with things again for a while later on today (pr maybe not)
This would be the the longer version.

Soyo KT880 Dragon2 v.2, XP2900+

The board has 4 slots and supports 4G of memory

Windows XP Home

I took out 2 512 sticks from DimA 1 and DimB 1(as per the manual) and
replaced them with 3 GSkill PC3200 1G sticks in DimA 1, DimA 2 and DimB 1.
The BIOS sees all three and reports them in POST. Windows gets past the dual
boot selection but during the Windows startup splash (*not* the welcome
screen) the back-and-forth bar halts after only two passes and a blue screen
flashes faster than I can read (I *think* it says IRQ not less or Equal but
not following that with any specifics, but I'm not sure and don't want to
continually reboot it for fear of corrupting something) and the machine
reboots all the way back to POST.

I took out all but one stick and tried each one on it's own and each are
good to go. I put only two in (DimA 1 and DimB 1) and she runs fine. I then
put the two 512 sticks in the other slots and it POSTs OK reporting 3G in
128bit mode, but XP failed as before.

This machine is *not* set to automatically restart on errors, but it just
flashes a blue screen too fast to read and reboots anyhow.

I see nothing in the event viewer that is any different than any other day
and *no* event log is created during the startup.

<SIGH>

Suggestions or things I'm not thinking of????

Sounds like a hardware problem for the experts in a hardware newsgroup.

I betcha memory has to be added in pairs. Try 4GB.

Not according to Crucial:

Re: Looping reboot in XP with 3G RAM Longer Version

It sounds like the two different memory pairs (512MB and 1GB pair) are not
compatible with each other in Dual Channel mode.
You can try Single Channel mode by inserting the 1GB sticks next to each
other (using one green slot and one blue slot) and see if the PC boots. If
it does then insert the two 512MB sticks in the remaining two slots and see
if you can now boot to windows.

The above assumes that
"Your Motherboard supports dual channel memory,
to take advantage of this feature you should use matched pairs of memory.
The first matched pair go in slot 1 and 3, the second pair uses slots 2 and
4.
The slot closest to the CPU is usually slot 1 and slot 3 will have the
same color as slot 1. Slots 2 and 4 will be the other color."

To use Single Channel mode the first pair uses slots 1 and 2
(One Blue and one green slot), and the second pair (512MB sticks)
uses slots 3 and 4 (again a Blue and Green slot).

If you are able to boot with all four sticks in Single Channel mode you will
have 3GB of memory but running at a slower memory throughput speed. If speed
is not an issue and you absolutely need 3GB of ram then you good to go.
Otherwise try the following listed below.

Memtest86+, this runs from a boot disk or CD and should eliminate or
confirm if your ram as configured is or is not compatible.
Let it run for as long as you can, 2,4,6,8 or more hours, if no errors by
then your ram is OK.
See: http://www.memtest.org/

Not to my understanding, but... I did take out one of the three Gig sticks
and pop in the two 512s to make two pair (even if not the same as the other
pair) to the same results.

I may not have been clear in the original post: I first used three matching
1G sticks. I experimented with pulling one of those and using the two 512s
instead with the same results.

The three one gig ran in single mode and the two one gig with two half gigs
ran in double... both POST just fine and get through the boot selection but
reboot during XP startup.

Haven't run memtest in years. might need to, but, having run each stick
independently with success leads me to think it might be the OS.

Thank you for thinking about this issue.

Are all the memory sticks "Dual bank design" (chips on both sides)
or "Single bank" (memory chips on one side only)?

Re: Looping reboot in XP with 3G RAM Longer Version

Run Memtest.
Also if your motherboard BIOS may allow you to adjust the memory timing,
if so start with a conservative setting.

Re: Looping reboot in XP with 3G RAM Longer Version

It is Dual Channel, that means you can not run three of them, you need 2 or
4, not 3.

If the board detects an odd number of memory sticks it will
automatically fall back to single channel mode in most cases otherwise
it would not post at all. I highly doubt this is the reason here.

Looks like this is a hardware issue as others have stated. However I do
not believe the ram is at fault here but rather the ram slots
themselves. Since it wasn't specifically mentioned I will assume you
are installing sticks in the same order every time right?

Ok. Here is a quick diagram here.

PC Boards will have it in this configuration...

| | | |
1 2 3 4

Dual channel pairing may be dependent on the board configuration.
Regardless this probably isn't the issue either. The issue seems to
stem from when you populate the 3rd slot from the left. All sticks were
tested only on the first two. Not the third or fourth.

Try this test for me.

Populate only the third slot from the left with ram (you can skip the
first two usually) and see what happens. This will be a single channel
1GB configuration but windows should boot fine if the ram slot is fine
on the board.

The problem with making detailed posts is that it's easy to lose track of
the info. In my original I detailed all of the slot combinations I tried.
What I failed to do was to translate what the board labels each slot to what
others might label them.

So, in your method:

Slot 1 = DimA 1
Slot 2 = DimA 2

Slot 3 = DimB 1
Slot 4 = DimB 2

With that said, I'll repeat this from my original and then add something at
the end:

---begin paste---

I took out 2 512 sticks from DimA 1 and DimB 1(as per the manual) and
replaced them with 3 GSkill PC3200 1G sticks in DimA 1, DimA 2 and DimB 1.
The BIOS sees all three and reports them in POST.

(snip)

I took out all but one stick and tried each one on it's own and each are
good to go. I put only two in (DimA 1 and DimB 1) and she runs fine. I then
put the two 512 sticks in the other slots and it POSTs OK reporting 3G in
128bit mode, but XP failed as before.

---end paste---

To clarify that last paragraph, I also tried all three sticks in all 4 slots
individually and they all run fine.

I think that adding the 2 512's to 2 of the 1024's to get 3G using all 4
slots in dual chanel mode speaks that it isn't likely the board. Windows
just doesn't want to get along with the 3Gig barrier no matter the
configuration.

I'll look around for a good hardware group, but the useful experience
available on Usenet has deteriorated. Hopefully I can get home from work in
time tomorrow to try dealing with G. Skill directly.

Thanks for the input.

correct.

The board is good with either 64 or 128 mode and automatically adjusts
(although I did try forcing everything into single 64bit mode). Also... as I
stated, I added two 512 sticks in proper orders to two of the 1024 sticks to
achieve 3G in dual 128bit mode and it still choked.

I'm leaning toward some sort of driver yacking on three gigs, although I
don't know what that would be that would care. I read a post about a UMAX
driver that does this, and so uninstalled my scanner even though it is not
UMAX without success.

Right. Thank you.

Now I'll ask if you can suggest a good one just as I asked Dave for
suggestions on one. I've looked around and I really don't see one that
should apply and has traffic, too. USENET ain't what it used to be.

I did finally get a Bug Check:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Stop: 0x0000000A (0x00000067,0x00000002,0x0000000,0x8053296D)

Next effort I got

Stop: 0x0000008E (0x000001D,0xBF962EE3,0xF743628C,0x00000000)

Date Stamp 43446058
