Acronis Disk Director has caused a serious problem on my PC

I thought I'd install Acronis Disk Director (version 10) on to my new
Windows 98SE PC. I wanted to make a backup of my HDD by copying the
whole C:\ partition. When Disk Director rebooted to perform this
operation, I get a Windows Protection Fault, and the only way I can
now use my computer is if I boot into safe mode.

Please can someone tell me how to remove Disk Director so that I can
boot-up my PC normally, without needing to go into safe mode? The
problem is that when I try to boot-up in normal mode, Disk Director
tries to perform its operation and it seriously fails every time.

In Safe Mode you can uninstal this software via / Control Panel /
Add/Remove.
Before doing so, it would help to delete all contents of all TEMP folders
e.g. c:/Temp/*.* and c:/Windows/Temp/*.*
Your problems may be caused by an incomplete installation of Acronis
software, that tries to complete on your next bootup (by calling files
Acronis wrote to TEMP folders.)

Post results here (good or bad.)

Thanks very much for the information. Actually, after posting my
Acronis problem message, I decided that I quickly wanted to get up-and-
running again, so I decided to format my HDD again, and start over.
However, I've bought three Acronis products, one of them being Disk
Director 10, and I need to use it on Win98SE, so your info will prove
useful if it badly fails again. I have just downloaded the latest
patch from Acronis, and I will patch my copy before attempting to do a
partition copy again.

If one of the products you purchased is TrueImage, use the Copy function in it
to create a clone instead of using DD. You also didn't mention if you were
backing up to a separate hard drive or not as it's not wise to backup to the
same HD your creating the copy of.

Products purchased were True Image versions 9 and 11, and also DD (v.
10). I will try using TI's copy function next time! If my (rather
bad) memory serves me correctly, I think I was trying to make a backup
of one partition to another partition on the same physical HDD. Next
time, I will attempt to get my external HDD to be correctly attached
to my Win98SE box, and then perform the copy function to this external
HDD.

Problem solved! I booted-up my PC using the Acronis True Image
(version 9 for Win98SE) CD-ROM, and used it's back-up function. I was
very pleased that TI was able to see that I had an external HDD
connected to the PC via the USB port. This might have been a problem,
because the Freecom external HDD which I bought (which wasn't cheap)
didn't have any Win98SE drivers - Windows98SE could see that a new
piece of hardware had been added to the system, but could not locate
any suitable drivers for it. However, booting-up using the TI CD-ROM
nicely side-stepped this issue.

Glad to hear you sorted out the issue. DO NOT forget to create a Bootable
Rescue Disk even though the ATI disk you have is bootable, it's always a wise
choice to have a backup disk in the event one fails.

I use Acronis TrueImage and love it, but have never tried Disk Director.

However, the on-line manual says that verison 10 of Disk Director is for NT,
2000, XP, and Vista. Thus, installing on 98 is probably not a good idea.
Ditto for some versions of TrueImage, certainly version 11.

In any event, Acronis products have an option to make a bootable CD, which
can be used for recovery, partition changes, etc outside of Windows, or when
Windows is not working. So, install Disk Director on a PC running XP (or
Vista) and make the bootable CD, then run from the CD to change paritions on
your win98 PC. The bootable CD actually runs LINUX, in case you were
interested, and is usually compatible with Intel-based PC and clones
thereof.

Yes, I'm definitely going to do this. One of the very first things I
tried to do when I was building my Win98 boxes, was to make some
bootable floppy discs, which I've been using ever since. However, it
would make a lot of sense to have a much more powerful bootable CD,
and so I will investigate this aspect of A TI. Thanks for the tip.

Please note that regarding the use of Acronis Disk Director, please

Now look at the bottom of the screen, and there's a "tick symbol" next
to the Windows 98 supported operating systems. I used this webpage to
ascertain that this was the product I needed to get for my Win98
requirements. It installs fine, but I did notice it crashed
immediately when run. I ran it again, and it was fine, and hasn't
crashed since. I did then register my copy on their website and this
allowed me access to their updated patched copy. This ran fine on
Win98 first time, no crashes.

Re: True Image, I purposefully bought both versions 9 and 11. 9 =
Win98 supported ok! 11 = supported XP ok! (with extra functionality
from earlier version 9)
