Microsoft Vista Problems & Deficiencies
Will SP1 Update Resolve Them?
I have 32 bit Ultimate Vista. It is running on a Dell XPS420 with Q6600,
2.4GHZ quad processor that I purchased in December 2007. I have 4 GB @ 667
MHZ of memory (3.3 GB usable). I have a 256 MB ATI HD 2600 graphics card. I
have a Dell Ultrasharp 22 inch monitor (1680 x 1050 pixels). I use McAfee
VirusScan Plus. I have Office Professional 2003 and use Outlook for e-mail.
Microsoft Works 8.5 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 came with the computer.
I have 2 Optical drives E: & F: a 320 SATA hard drive C: & D: and a 250 GB
SATA hard drive G: for backup. I use Embarq DSL. I have a HP psc 1210v
all-in-one printer for normal use and a very simple Lexmark Z600 printer use
exclusively for printing PGIFC name badges. Microsoft update is auto and all
Microsoft software is current. Other programs such as McAfee VirusScan,
Windows Defender etc. are up to date.
It is April 20, 2008 and Microsoft Update has not offered the SP1 update.
When can I expect the SP1 update?
I have the following problems which I hope SP1 will address:
Excessive disk access. My computer has continuous disk access even when no
applications are running. I was concerned that a virus or spyware was
running but the disk access calls all seem legitimate but excessive and
unnecessary. The disk activity light is always blinking.
Print spooler stops inconsistently. Some days the spooler runs OK with no
stops other days it stops several times in the period of an hour. When the
print spooler stops all printing stops and even the control panel / printer
display is blank. The print spooler stops on a “Data Execution Prevention”
(DEP) violation. As a temporary fix, I have set the print spooler to always
restart 1 minute after it stops.
Some HTML e-mails are displayed in plain text (garbage) when sent out by
Bcc: This problem is mentioned on Internet chat rooms as being a known
problem on Vista computers using Office 2003.
The Ultimate Troubleshooter will not run. I keep getting an update to Adobe
Elements (Adobe Camera Raw 4, 4.3.1 update. The update will not install.
Many of my old programs that ran on XP do not run on Vista. These old
programs are curve fitting programs that do not have a “Windows” install you
just copied them to the C drive and ran them. My TKSolver recommended for
Windows NT 4/2000 or higher, appears to run OK but I get a registry error
each time I run it.
I can not load pictures from my Sony cameras using "Scanners & Cameras".
“Scanners & Cameras” does find my HP 1210v scanner but does not find my Sony
cameras. I can use Microsoft Windows / Microsoft Photo Gallery to offload my
pictures from my camera but its functionality is woefully inadequate. Adobe
Photo Downloader can be used to offload pictures from my Sony cameras but it
is also not as good as “Scanners & Cameras”.
The View/Refresh function on Windows Explorer does not work. You have to
close Windows Explorer and then reopen it to see new folders that were added
while Windows Explorer was running. This is especially troublesome when you
add folders to a remote computer and want to transfer files to the new
folder. This feature worked on XP.
