I posted this problem a few weeks ago and got it resolved, but it has
resurfaced. A few facts are different this time.

SAME AS THE LAST TIME:
I have Windows 98 Second edition. I made no changes to my computer in the
recent past. All of the sudden, when I boot up I get this message "Windows
Protection Error." It suggests that I open in safe mode. I am able to do
that. What do I have to do to get rid of this problem and start using my
computer in the normal mode?

NEW FACTS
Bootlog.txt shows the following errors this time.
Load Failed: ndis2sup.vxd
initfailure: esdi_506.pdr
initcompletefailed = sdvxd
dynamicload failed: nuwav.dre : File not found
The following .ttf files failed to load, with a failure code of 2.

befrisky.ttf
cgpastes.ttf
gilshd.ttf
grephlt.ttf
graphltn.ttf
lucasit.ttf
lucasr.ttf
miles.ttf
signetro.ttf

Thank you.

Satish

Re: Windows Protection Error Again!

Did you try to restore the registry file that worked last time?

I did not see your previous post...but as a precaution I suggest running a
RAM test
just to be sure a hardware error isn't to blame

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

I'd perform the RAM test *prior* to a registry restoration attempt

BTW: What did you do two weeks ago to get the machine going?

It was about a month ago, I think....IIRC he restored the Registry to a previous
copy from before the problem occurred.

yep...
I had to go back quite a ways to find that post.

Hope the OP still has a copy of that good registry.

The RAM may or may not find something

The solution was to restore the last registry.

I rebooted the machine to do RAM test and could not even get to restrat in
safe mode. Now I get this message and the computer shuts down.

"error loading gdi.exe"

Thanks

Thanks Glee. I was a bit slow in responding.

That link I gave you was one for creating a bootable floppy...
you do not boot to windows to run the test.
Your bios should be set to boot first from floppy.

The test will run for as long as you allow it to...
but let it make at least one pass for every individual test...
or until errors are found

If there are any errors...the RAM should be replaced

Error loading gdi.exe:

It may be, as philo suggested, that the RAM is at fault. Bad RAM will cause
Registry errors, resulting in repeatedly having to restore a previous known-good
Registry.

Please follow the instructions here to create a disk for testing RAM:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

<quote>

To run Windows Memory Diagnostic, you must first set up Windows Memory Diagnostic on
a 3.5-inch floppy disk or CD-ROM.

Go to the directory where you saved the Windows Memory Diagnostic executable file,
mtinst.exe.
Double-click mtinst.exe to start Windows Memory Diagnostic Setup. Depending on your
security settings, the File Download dialog box might appear when you run
mtinst.exe. If it appears, click Open to start Windows Memory Diagnostic Setup.
Other security dialog boxes might also appear. This can happen, for example, if you
try to install Windows Memory Diagnostic from a Universal Naming Convention (UNC)
shared folder. These dialog boxes are related to your security settings and not to
Windows Memory Diagnostic. If you experience problems when you are trying to install
Windows Memory Diagnostic, either be sure to run Mtinst.exe from your local
computer, or review your security settings and the documentation included in your
version of Windows.

Do either of the following:

Click Create Startup Disk to install Windows Memory Diagnostic on a floppy disk.

Select the floppy disk drive that you want to use from the list provided.
Insert a formatted floppy disk into this drive and then click Create. When the
installation is complete, the Success dialog box will appear.

Or, click Save CD Image to Disk if you want to create a CD-ROM that you can use to
start your computer.

Select a location where you want to save the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) 9660 image and then click Save. When the file has been saved,
the Success dialog box will appear.

For more information about creating a CD-ROM that you can boot from, see the Note at
the end of this section.
Restart your computer with the disk on which you installed Windows Memory Diagnostic
(either the floppy or CD-ROM drive).

Important
In the boot sequence, the drive with the Windows Memory Diagnostic disk must precede
any other devices on which there is a bootable program, such as a hard disk on which
Windows is installed. You can configure the boot sequence in the BIOS settings. On
most computers, the default boot sequence includes the floppy drive. For more
information about configuring the boot sequence, see the documentation for your
motherboard.

Re: Windows Protection Error Again!

Thank you Glee, philo and Fan924.

The RAM test did not find any errors. I let it run for about 45 minutes,
about 5 passes.

I will now work on the gdi.exec problem. I had moved the font directory
thinking that I needed to do that to fix my original problem.

Satish

Is that "nuwav.drv"?
