Windows Media Store Update Center has stopped working?

Hey gang,

I posted the below, in the Media Center group couple of days ago, have not
got any responses yet. Thought I might try here next, as there are some
pretty knowledgeable folks hang out in here.
Anyone else ever run across this? Not sure if it is something I should be
very concerned about or not...




I recently, have starting getting this message pop up on occasion, even when
I am not running Media Player , or Media Center.


" Windows Media Store Update Manager has stopped working".

I click on to submit for more information, and do not get anything back.

I copied the below, out of the details screen:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: mcupdate.EXE
Application Version: 6.0.6001.18000
Application Timestamp: 47919df7
Fault Module Name: KERNEL32.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6001.18000
Fault Module Timestamp: 4791ada5
Exception Code: e0434f4d
Exception Offset: 000000000002649d
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: e2b5

I am using Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and have SP1 installed.

Any ideas, what might be causing this, would greatly be appreciated.

I've googled around and found absolutely no solution to the appcrash of
mcupdate.exe
I've only found one suggestion of uninstalling the google toolbar which I
don't know whether you have it or not.
Sounds like the Media Center update program is running in the background and
fails when trying to update something.
I am not at a Vista machine right now so I can't check my guessings.
Maybe it is a service you can disable or stop without doing any harm.
Running services can be accessed by pressing simultaneously Shift-Ctrl-Esc
and choosing the "Services" tab.
Services startup behaviour can be accessed by Windows Key + R,
"services.msc" and ENTER.

Yeah, I had tried the google approach, and could not find any clear info on
it either. No, I do not have the google toolbar.
I am not 100% sure, but it seems like this did not start happening to me
until after I installed SP1.

I can't see any mcupdate.exe program/service running in the background in my
Vista Ultimate.

Thanks Carlos.

I don't see one in mine either. I have also checked, under services.msc, and
don't see anything there either. I do see a " Windows Media Center Extender
Service ", and it shows as disabled there.

I too had the same issue and scoured the internet for some time. I
kept closing the program and then tried to reopen it only to get the
message that Media Center has stopped working.

I finally found the fix at : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947464/en-us

I followed the instructions and deleted database and sure enough, it
fixed the problem.

Then I got another error message saying 'Unable to launch "SymAddIn"'
along with the check option to disable this application. Instead of
that checking off the option, I found this fix at:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=856548

Seems there was some leftover stuff from Norton Anti Virus that needed
to be deleted from the Registry. So far, Media Center is now working
as it should.

Thanks for the info,

However, I notice that is regarding Media Center has stopped working, my
issue is I occasionally get the message pop up that the Media Store Update
Center has stopped working...

Do you think, the same fix would apply to this? I don't even use Media
Center, and it is not running when I get this message...

Hey gang,

I wanted to report back, and give an update, on the below issue I was
having.

While it may be too soon to tell, it appears I may have inadvertently fixed
this issue on my system.

Early this morning, I was browsing through msconfig, and noticed a couple of
entries there regarding media player. I did a google search, and it appeared
it was related to sharing being enabled in windows media player 11, it
suggested if not sharing on a network, to disable that and those entries
should go away. Since I am on a network, and do not need to share, figured I
would change that.

So I went into Media Library, in WMP 11, removed the checkmark from " share
my media ", under media sharing, and rebooted. Checked msconfig, and the
entries were gone.

Ok, so after doing this, a couple of hours passed, and I thought hmm,
haven't got the media store update center has stopped working error message
yet. Normally, I would get that after only being logged on for a few
minutes.

Now, it has been several hours since I made this change, and I have yet to
see that error message again.

Now comes the really interesting part - as of late, I have been getting some
blue screens, usually upon shutting down Vista. Couple of times it happened
whilst loading Vista. Not every time, but enough to be a royal pain, like
every 2nd or 3rd time.
Also, since making this change, I have rebooted Vista 64 several times, I
have shut it down, and powered back up several times, slept it several
times, and so far < major knocking on wood >, I have not gotten the blue
screen again, has been rock solid. So I may perhaps, have inadvertently
solved two issues here...

Again, I want to stress, it just may be too early to tell, but so far has
been running great for about 4-5 hours since making this change.

If the problem comes back, I will post it here, if not, then this must have
done the trick.

Re: Windows Media Store Update Center has stopped working?

Ok, now the problem seems to be fixed.

I posted again yesterday, in the Media Center group, and this time got some
help.

Turns out, I needed to delete the Media Center database, as it was
corrupted. Not sure how it got that way, as I don't use Media Center, but I
deleted it per the following and it has fixed my issue:

Just thought I would report back, on the off chance anyone else having this
issue happens upon this post.
