App fails to launch

[jferguson-onco]

I'm running XP sp2 on a pc; after I install and try to run 2 different
applications, medical physics apps, I get an error stating that the
application has failed to launch because the path is invalid.

I browse the folder and launch the app from the executable, not the
shortcut, and I get the same error.

Occasionally I will receive this error and while I'm still looking at the
screen, cause I'm stumped, the application will launch and work correctly.

Has anyone seen this before? If so how did you take care of the problem?

Run disk clean up and then open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK]

Make sure the machine malware/virus free by scanning with an up2date
security software.

it sounds sort of similar
to that of opening the
windows explorer and
instead of a list of files
and folders zipping right
up for display, you get
a flash light searching
for files and folders.

sometimes such delays
will cause an immediate
response like the error
message, then shortly
the program will launch.

but the cause of such
delays are a result of
a number of things.

below are a few things
to do.

what i would suggest as
an attempt is to:

1) disable all your startups
including your antivirals,
temporarily that is:

click start >run>msconfig

then go to the startup
tab and disable all of
the entries.

you can jot down which
ones were disabled and
you can post them here
so that we can examine
what you have or should
not have.

2) clear your "prefetch"
folder. it can be found
in the windows directory.

just go ahead and wipe/delete
all the entries away, as
windows will automatically
rebuild an entry as needed.

3) then before you reboot
any of the above, go to
admin tools> services
and enable indexing.

if it is noted as enabled,
then cycle it by disabling
it and enabling/starting it again.

then reboot

afterwards go to that folder
and launch that executable
file and without using the
shortcut method.

Sure. The message, "the path is invalid" means that the path the program
tried to follow to find its elements or data did not exist, or, after
following the path, whatever it was looking for was not there.

You may have installed the application in the wrong place. Check with the
vendor for their specific requirements.

I performed the disk cleanup utility then ran the sfc utility and it still
does not work.

After I did this, it didn't work so I uninstalled the app, rebooted the pc,
ran the sfc utility and then reinstalled the app, still does not work.

I continue to receive invalid path and I'm 100% confident that the path is
valid. Even the path that it displays in the message is correct so I don't
think it's "looking" at the wrong path.

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried installing with the short-file names for the key folders in
the path? You will have to determine what those are, but I have had to do
that with at least one application.
