The CD drive in my Inspiron 7000 reads and opens things like pdf files, but
will not play commercial or burned CDs. WinMediaPlayer message says it
cannot handle this type file (.cda)

Sometimes another message says, "Unable to find file".

I re-installed WMPlayer, check all the file associations, refreshed drivers,
all to no avail.

Any help appreciated

Re: CD PLAYER PROBLEM

Try an alternative player. There are several free ones available.

One called media player classic is pretty good, and supports win98.

One of many possible download sites:

Re: CD PLAYER PROBLEM

Longshot: Under Folder Options/File Types/CDA/ check to see what program it
opens with. If it's not WMP change it to that, but if it does say WMP
(presumably it does) then click Advanced and then Edit for both Open and
Play to see if the path actually goes to WMP.
