We are using Windows 2003 SBS , where ntbackup utility was used as a tool to backup on to the AIT (tapes) , since a while the ntbackup utility dose'nt openup it just won't respond once
can anyone please let me know what's the reason behind it and how can it be rectified please.

I've heard of people having problems with AIT. But you'll need to provide
more info - SP levels of everything, event log errors, etc.

I'm setting up this reply to crosspost to
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs as that's the best group to handle any
SBS issues (even if they don't seem unique to SBS). If you get the NTBackup
problem resolved I do suggest you try SBSBackup (it's a nice GUI/wrapper for
NTBackup), which will ensure that SBS is being backed up in the way it
really needs to.

Re: ntbackup utility

something 'failing silently' has, IME, recently been most commonly
attributable to DEP. Just why DEP would be interfering with NTBackup or
SBSBackup is a bit of a mystery and if it proves to be the case this is my
1st hearing of it.

I'd try turning of DEP (temporarily, it is normally desirable) to see
whether it has any effect on your ability to run NTBackup.
