This is a repeat of last years post on the GA511NA pc card I put in my
toshiba 225 cds laptop. I have tried several installs/uninstalls with no
luck. The install wizard asks for the 98se disk sometimes and sometimes not.
The device manager shows the yellow icon for this installation but I just
can not get it to work. Any network guru's out there?

You need to go the the manufacturer's website and download the proper
drivers for your device.
(and install them of course)
I doubt if the drivers for that device would exist within Win98.

BTW: If the card is fairly new and Netgear does not have win98 drivers on
their site...
I did see win9x drivers at www.driverguide.com ...of course I cannot say if
they actually work or not.

Does the CD have a win9x folder
or is the driver in the self-extracting executable format?

Good.
When you go to install the device...all you should have to do is point to
installer to that folder.
If the device is installed but with the yellow warning exclaimation mark in
device manager
you'll need to take the option to reinstall the drivers

1. Netgear Tech Support (800) 211-2069

2. If the installation CD installed anything in Add/Remove Programs, remove
it.

3. Go to the Network applet in Control Panel and remove EVERYTHING there.

4. Go to System applet in Control Panel and make sure nothing having to do
with ANY networking is still installed (I'm mostly thinking of items that
probably have a yellow exclamation mark, but you don't want ANY newtork
adapter.) I assume you perhaps have a modem of some kind, and yes, I DO want
you to remove it and any auxiliary devices that might be part of its
installation. You can reinstall that later (just make sure you have the
drivers first.)

5. Shut down the system, and with the adapter unplugged, restart the system.
Once it's fully started (some hardware may automatically reinstall... Oh
well...), see my article at http://grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm. Set
up a Clean Boot and then run the Netgear installation CD.

(Ignore the reference to another article about Security as that article is
under revision.)

6. Once the Netgear adapter is installed and tested as working fine, finish
reinstalling any other hardware (the modem?).

7. Take your system out of Clean Boot mode.

We do not understand what you did, and do not
understand "no luck." The point is that instal CDs may
have more than one SETUP.EXE -- so if using a legacy
OS like Win98 we must first navigate to the Win98
folder and run the SETUP there and no other (or
similarly for DEVICE.INF files, which can show multiple
identical filenames on a CD even though their contents
may be different (some Win98 or XP or Vista.)

We still need to know what you did and what happened,
e.g. did you reinstal via Plug & Play (removing the device
and rebooting for boot-time detection) or from the
/Device Manager / Properties /Update menu or directly
from /Win98/DEVICE.INF on the CD? We do not know
what happened, whether your procedure installed the
same drivers or different drivers that work no better.

I agree.
We need to know *exactly* what you mean by "no luck"
a verbatum quotation of the error message would be in order here.

I just noticed one major screw-up in my instructions -- when you go into
Device Manager to make sure it's free of any networking devices, modem,
modem enumerator, etc., it should be done in Safe Mode. I'm getting too old
for this.

I have tried reinstalling the driver in the device manager navigating to the
cd win 98 folder mostly. But initially I ran the setup from the cd auto
starting itself.Then I shut down and inserted the card and re-booted and
made many attempts to reinstall in the device manager.

I removed it from the device manager once and had a dificult time getting it
to re-appear in the device manager.
I think I tried letting win 98 install its own drivers a few times but I do
not remember..that was last year, so I'm guessing I need to remove whatever
I see in networking and start over?

You need to point the installer to the win98 folder on the cd that came with
your netcard.
It needs to read the .inf file

Have a look there to be sure you do have an .inf file

BTW: one very rare occasions I've seen mfg's have the .inf file be a hidden
file.
so if you do not see the inf file...enable "hidden" files to be shown in
Windows explorer.
Again, it's not too often that mfg's make that mistake

Well, if the correct drivers do exist in the Netgear driver cd...
then yes...you may want to boot to safe mode...
then remove all instances of the Netgear card...
reboot and let Windows re-detect it.

At that point you will need to insert the drive cd that came with the card
and point it to the win98 drivers folder

Did you install the driver and utility software first, remove the CD, reboot
if prompted, back at the desktop run the Found New Hardware wizard selecting
"Automatically install.....", when complete shutdown, restart and once back at
the desktop configure the adapter for your network as suggested in the document?

I followed philo's instructions installing a new fa311v2 in another win 98
machine and used the win 2000 driver and it worked perfectly. still playing
with this toshiba though...

Hey...thanks for posting back
and i'm glad you got it working...

but a win98 driver should really have been used.

Only rarely will I see a win2k driver work on win98 and I probably would
have recommended
against trying it...
but you cannot argue with success.

I totally missed that you still did *not* get it working in the Toshiba yet.

I think I just read as much as the "worked perfectly" part...

anyway...if you are still struggling with the Toshiba...

I'd really caution you against using a win2k driver...


you should make all efforts to find the right win98 driver...

I'm getting too tired to read through all the back posts now...

but Gary has put you in the right direction by telling you to start over
from scratch
by deleting your network devices in safe mode.
