Jensens Harris has a great Mix O8 video on The Story of the Ribbon. In this he elucidates as to why the ribbon was procured, and the problems it solved. Who designed the Visual studio Interface because they surely are the unsung hero of UI design? One can fit a lot of components/ features in a small amount of space. This was pre-office 2007 and was ingenious in the way it was procured.
I stumbled across this docking manager on Sourceforge, and have been blown away. Yes commercial versions are available, but this has been written by 1 bloke. I can't help but feel that Winforms will be looked at like C++ is to managed C#/VB, i.e. elite,* because if you look at the source code, there is a lot of stuff going on in there. Yes WPF can make the screens look good, but whether we will ever get the performace remains to be seen. WPF is technically less challenging, but challenging in a different way. I see myself as being able to develop on both platforms, and really wish people would admit that winforms is actually much harder that WPF, at a fundamental level, and stop just seeing it as archaic.
