2 SBS2003 SERVERS IN ONE LOCATION

Hi all,

can anyone help or point me to some reference material about having 2 small
business servers in one office controlling 2 domains although they are both
running with no conflicts I cannot get one to access the internet or ping
form any workstation in the building.

Hello Simon,

Ofcourse you can run two domains in one office and also on one physical network.
Not the best solution but will work. The question about your problem is,
how are the servers/clients are connected to the internet, i assume via switch
and the switch to a ADLS router or something similar? Check that the clients/server
use only the domain ainternal DNS servers and that the DNS server has configured
a forwarder in the DNS management console under the server properties forwarders
tab pointing to the ISP's DNS server. Also please post an unedited ipconfig
/all from one SBS and one client from the same domain. I assume that both
domains have the same problem because both can not access the internet. So
lets start with one domain first.

Hi Meinolf,

First of all, I would like to thank you for your reply on behalf of Simon. :)

Let me explain the situation in detail. Actually, our current network
infrastructure has DHCP and DNS running on the same Windows Small Business
Server 2003 server machine.
The network traffic external to our domain i.e. Internet is accessed using a
Broadband router.

Now, we have got another server machine. And we are planning to put up
another server that also serves the purpose of DHCP and DNS services, apart
from being just a DB server.

So, we thought may be if we can put two subnets, both subnets have different
domains and different DHCP and DNS server.

So, is it feasible to continue with it as planned or do you have some other
and more useful solution, in terms of maintainance, ease of implementation
etc.

Well, we haven't put up the second domain in our network. So, there is only
one domain at the moment. And all the domain users can access internet.

Hello muhammad,

I think on the server ipconfig you have typo at the WINS server, different
network not accesssible with your subnet mask. So just to come clear, only
the server can not open websites and ping outside your network? Check if
a firewall is enabled on it that blocks the traffic.
For SBS you also should post to the microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs NG,
because SBS has a lot special features designed for SBS.

Well - you definitely cannot use two SBS servers in one domain.

If you're going to use two SBS servers in the same office to serve two
different companies who merely share office space, you should split up the
LANs so they're not touching at all, even if they'll share the same Internet
connection. You will run into loads of problems with DNS and so forth
otherwise.

An example is below: note that you'll need at least two static public IP
addresses to do this.

However, if this is for one company, you should have only one SBS server and
anything else should run regular Windows server.

most expert help.
